Brian Healy looks over the week five Dubai World Cup Carnival racecard and gives his Thursday Meydan tips for another cracking fixture at the Emirates venue.

It is week five of the Dubai World Cup carnival and the richest raceday in the world is only a few weeks away from taking place. There has already been plenty of thrills and excitement to be had in previous weeks, and the fifth week of action at the premier Emirates track promises to be no different with this week’s fixure spearheaded by the Group Two Al Rashidiya.

3:40 Meydan – Meydan Cup Sponsored By P & O Marinas (Listed Handicap) (Turf) (3yo+ 90-118) 1m6f
4:15 Meydan – Mina Hamriya (Handicap) (Dirt) (3yo+ 90-105) 1m
4:50 Meydan – Mina Rashid (Handicap) (Turf) (3yo+ 90-105) 1m

The day’s feature race is supported by Group Three and Listed action as well as some competitive handicaps and an Arabian Group One race. Brian Healy assesses all seven scheduled races and gives his Thursday Meydan tips on another unmissable card.

THURSDAY MEYDAN TIPS 30 JANUARY AT A GLANCE

2.30 Meydan – ZIYADD (10/3, William Hill)
3:05 Meydan – BARNEY ROY (4/5, Paddy Power)
3:40 Meydan – UNIVERSAL ORDER (9/2, Bet365)
4:15 Meydan – DUBAI LEGACY (4/1, Paddy Power)
4:50 Meydan – MOQTARREB (8/1, BetVictor)
5:25 Meydan – DRAFTED (13/8, Ladbrokes)
6:00 Meydan – SIMSIR (3/1, Coral)

2.30 Meydan – Al Maktoum Challenge R2 Sponsored By Jafza (Arabian Group 1) (Dirt) (5yo+) 1m1f

ZIYADD (10/3, William Hill) made an encouraging return to action over course and distance recently, finding only one too good in the Madjani Stakes. The Bibi De Carrere entire should benefit from that reappearance and he can go one better here.

Jean De Roualle’s charge often sets the pace and he’s well positioned to do so from the number two gate; assuming he gets out fast and bags the rail then then could prove hard to peg back.

3:05 Meydan – Al Rashidiya Sponsored By Hamdan Bin Mohammed Cruise Terminal (Group 2) (Turf) (3yo+) 1m1f

Four of the seven runners in this Group Two sport the famous Godolphin blue silks, and on his reappearance it might be worth chancing BARNEY ROY (4/5, Paddy Power) to make a winning return.

The Excelebration gelding won three of his first four starts for Richard Hannon which included the 2017 St James’s Palace Stakes. Having since joined Saeed bin Suroor following a disappointing run in that year’s Champion Stakes he was absent form more than 550 days before making an encouraging return to action last May in an Ascot Listed contest where he was beaten only a neck.

He returned to winning ways next time in France before flopping in a bid for the Queen Anne Stakes where he could only finish eighth behind Lord Glitters. He hasn’t been seen since however, but given his performance when fresh last term this may be the time to catch him at his best.

This is a pretty weak renewal of this Group Two prize however and he could be the one to side with if recapturing his best on his return.

3:40 Meydan – Meydan Cup Sponsored By P & O Marinas (Listed Handicap) (Turf) (3yo+ 90-118) 1m6f

Dee Ex Bee is interesting on his first outing for a new yard, but he could be anchored by his big weight on his reappearance dropping back in trip and the race-fit UNIVERSAL ORDER (9/2, Bet365) can notch up another win.

David Simcock’s charge won three of his five starts on turf last term, rounding off with an impressive win at Yarmouth prior to a break.

He returned to action to readily win over course and distance earlier in the month in a similar contest to the one he finds himself in here and likely to have further improvement to come he could strike again.

Although he has stamina to prove over this extra two furlongs, having flopped over the distance on his only previous try at the distance, he could nevertheless be worth another chance at the longer trip and the application of a hood might help settle him.

He has a bit to find on form with the former Mark Johnston-trained Group winner, but looks worth chancing as a steadily progressive sort who may have better still to come.

4:15 Meydan – Mina Hamriya (Handicap) (Dirt) (3yo+ 90-105) 1m

DUBAI LEGACY (4/1, Paddy Power) wasn’t seen to best effect here earlier in the month, held up off the steady pace and unable to quicken when the race developed into a dash.

It was however a promising return to action by the Discreet Cat gelding who should feel the benefit of that effort and he can get back on the winning trail here.

Saeed bin Suroor’s charge book-ended his last campaign with wins at Newcastle and Newmarket, and he was only beaten around three lengths in that reappearance from three months off the track where he was drawn wide and perhaps wasn’t suited by the early gallop.

His pedigree suggests he’ll handle this switch to dirt and although again drawn towards the outside there is likely to be more of a pace to this contest and he can go close.

Saeed bin Suroor can saddle a Thursday Meydan winner.

4:50 Meydan – Mina Rashid (Handicap) (Turf) (3yo+ 90-105) 1m

MOQTARREB (8/1, BetVictor) showed a decent level of form for Roger Varian last campaign where he won at Newmarket prior to finishing a good fourth behind Wings Of Time back at Flat HQ on his final start.

The Kingman gelding made an encouraging return to action over course and distance two weeks ago, finishing just one length fourth behind Suedois and he features in this contest from a very winnable rating having produced that performance from 4lbs out of the weights.

He can improve for that run, and a repeat of that reappearance effort could be enough to see him get back on the scoresheet despite being drawn towards the outside.

But if he can overcome that disadvantage then there appears no reason why he can’t go well again and he can show progress to exploit what looks a dangerous mark.

5:25 Meydan – Al Shindagha Sprint Sponsored By DP World UAE Region (Group 3) (Dirt) (3yo+) 6f

DRAFTED (13/8, Ladbrokes) has won four times over this course and distance and possibly just needed his reappearance behind Gladiator King and Ibn Malik earlier in the month where the Field Commission gelding finished two lengths’ third behind those reopposing rivals.

Doug Watson’s charge was perhaps unsuited by the steady gallop on that occasion, but he could get more of a pace to aim at this time around and he’ll come on for that reappearance.

He won this contest twelve months ago, and he’ll be seen to better effect this time around if they go off hard early. He’ll also strip fitter for his return and is 2lbs better off with Gladiator King so may well turn the tables in this latest encounter.

6:00 Meydan – Jebel Ali Port (Handicap) (Turf) (3yo+ 90-105) 1m2f

SIMSIR (3/1, Coral) won twice in Ireland last September, scoring a turf win on debut at Cork and then following up at Dundalk three weeks later.

Mick Halford’s charge has since run well in defeat, bagging a brace of silver medals at Dundalk and over course and distance latterly where he was beaten less than one length behind Certain Lad who reopposes here.

The Zoffany gelding is 4lbs better off with that rival, while he holds the plum inside berth and the unexposed four-year old could well find another jolt of improvement to go one better and get back on the winning trail in a very competitive finale.
