Thursday racing best bets – Tips for every race
With six UK and Irish horse racing meetings scheduled to go to post across the UK and Ireland on Thursday, Brian Healy gives his Thursday racing best bets and tips for every race.
Assuming the recent bad weather doesn’t have another say in proceedings, Thursday should play host to six UK and Irish horse racing fixtures with afternoon jumps racing from Musselburgh, Ludlow and Taunton; as well as from Clonmel in Ireland.
Meanwhile, the Thursday all-weather action comes from Newcastle on tapeta in the afternoon, and also Chelmsford in the evening under the floodlights where there is racing on the polytrack.
Musselburgh (jumps) – 1.00 – 3.52pm (6 races)
Ludlow (jumps) – 1.40 – 5.00pm (7 races)

Newcastle (flat, aw) – 1.55 – 4.45pm (6 races)
Clonmel (jumps) – 2.00 – 5.20pm (7 races)

MUSSELBURGH RACING TIPS
CLONDAW RIGGER (11/4, Bet365) could prove the best of an uninspiring field and the Stowaway gelding can get back on the scoresheet here.
Katy Price’s charge won twice in November 2018, scoring wins at Chepstow and Wincanton; but he’s been lightly raced since and not at his best in a handful of starts this campaign. His last outing saw him beat only three rivals home at Wetherby last month, but he has been dropped to a rating 1lb below his last winning mark.
He might want better ground than this, but this is a poor contest with winning form thin on the ground and he could be worth siding with to get back to winning ways.
Course-winner CELTIC FLAMES (15/8, William Hill) looks worth keeping onside where having posted his best effort of the campaign when finishing third at Kelso last month on his return to chasing.
Lucinda Russell’s charge won over fences here back in March 2018, and his last win saw him strike over hurdles at Perth in the September of that year. Subsequently absent for more than one year, he returned with a good third over hurdles at Hexham in December.
His latest run where he finished six lengths’ third to Lastin’ Memories back over fences could be good enough to see him get back on the winning trail if he can repeat that effort from the same mark.
1.00 – Dora De Janeiro
1.30 – Made For You
2.07 – Clondaw Rigger
2.42 – Iona Lad
3.17 – Celtic Flames
3.52 – Away At Dawn
LUDLOW RACING TIPS
TRUCKIN AWAY (3/1, Ladbrokes) has improved his finishing position with each start over fences, latterly finishing third at Taunton in his return from a break earlier in the month.
Philip Hobbs’ charge wasn’t beaten too far in that outing, and he could find another jolt of improvement here to feature. He can compete from 1lb lower in the weights and the wind operation he had prior to his last run could be a source of improvement.
None of this quintet can be ruled out and a case can be made for each of the runners; but still unexposed over fences he could be the one to side with here given his smart hurdles form which suggests he could have scope for better still.
ROLL AGAIN (5/2, Paddy Power) wasn’t seen to best effect last time out at Warwick although he was possibly flying too high in any case when contesting the Hampton Novices’ Chase.
Venetia Williams’ charge could however be chanced to bounce back to winning form having struck here in December prior to a fall under a penalty at Kempton on Boxing Day when yet to be asked for effort in a competitive contest.
He’s only had four runs over fences so could yet have more to offer in this discipline, and forgiven that last run as he drops back in class then he could be worth chancing to get back to winning ways returning to the scene of his last success.
1.40 – Crypto
2.15 – Truckin Away
2.50 – Nautical Star
3.25 – Roll Again
4.00 – Kilconny Bridge
4.30 – Optimised
5.00 – Demopolis
TAUNTON RACING TIPS
NATIVE ROBIN (6/1, William Hill) posted his last success back in December 2018 when scoring at Fakenham, but Jeremy Scott’s charge could be worth chancing to regain the winning thread here.
The veteran Robin Des Pres gelding is a generally consistent sort, making the frame in six of his eight subsequent starts following that last win. His latest saw him finish third to easy winner Mr Mcgo at Doncaster despite being hampered and not seen to best effect.
This looks easier and he could benefit now from this longer trip where he is 3lbs lower than his last outing.
TACTICAL MANOEUVRE (10/3, William Hill) is on a roll having won his last three starts and the Marienbard gelding could prove a tough nut to crack as he bids for the four-timer.
Jeremy Scott’s charge scored two of those wins over this course and distance, latterly beating the reopposing Russian Service by one length earlier in the month.
He’s only 4lbs higher in the weights and his progress perhaps hasn’t halted just yet so he could be worth keeping onside while in this current good vein of form where he can continue to make his presence felt.
1.47 – Todd
2.22 – Eritage
2.57 – Native Robin
3.32 – Jobsonfire
4.07 – Risk And Roll
4.37 – Tactical Manoeuvre
5.07 – Martinhal
NEWCASTLE RACING TIPS
PAPA POWER (11/10, Coral) could make the most of his experience to see off fellow last-time scorer Da Vinci in a race which could develop into a match between the pair.
Andrew Balding’s Nathaniel colt had shaped well on his debut at Chelmsford in January although he appeared in need of the experience; but he stepped up for that outing to beat Express Route by the thick end of five lengths back at that venue earlier in the month.
He made every yard of the running that day and he is likely to improve further so could prove the answer here given his greater experience and assuming he handles the switch to tapeta.
PERSIAN SUN (10/3, BetVictor) won his only previous visit to this venue back in December 2018; but while the Dansili gelding hasn’t backed up that success since, he went close latest at Kempton and could get back on the scoresheet with a repeat of that run.
Stuart Williams’ charge was only beaten a half-length into third behind Olympic Conquerer in that last outing and the handicapper has left him alone at the weights despite his near miss.
He could get a soft lead in this contest where he could post a bold show over the shorter trip and if allowed to stride on and make his own running then he could prove hard to peg back under Ben Curtis.
1.55 – Ilhabela Fact
2.30 – Papa Power
3.05 – Persian Sun
3.40 – Padleyourowncanoe
4.15 – Millicent Fawcett
4.45 – Fortamour
CLONMEL RACING TIPS
Henry de Bromhead and Rachael Blackmore have combined to great effect this term EPSON DU HOUX (4/1, Bet365) could be worth chancing to get off the mark.
The Diamond Boy gelding has cut little ice in his three hurdles starts, but he had hinted at ability when finishing fourth in a bumper and he could make his presence felt in a race which looks ordinary on paper.
This could well prove to be a decent opportunity for him to open his account for top connections, and he remains with the scope for better than he’s shown thus far.
AHERLOW (3/1, Paddy Power) has made the frame in four of his last five starts, latterly returning from a short break to finish three lengths’ runner-up behind Jurby at Down Royal last month.
Henry de Bromhead’s charge has yet to open his account over fences, but his latest effort was better and he could go one place better now equipped with cheekpieces where he’s only been raised 1lb in the weights.
Back in novice company for this latest outing he could get off the mark in this sphere with a repeat of that effort.
2.00 – Marajman
2.35 – Epson Du Houx
3.10 – Moll Dote
3.45 – Ask Mary
4.20 – The West Awaits
4.50 – Aherlow
5.20 – Deilginis
CHELMSFORD RACING TIPS
NIGHT VOYAGER (7/4, Bet365) shaped well amidst inexperience when finishing sixth on debut at Lingfield in January. However the Dandy Man colt showed the benefit of that run when finding only one too good latest over seven furlongs here.
Beaten less than two lengths behind Sansevero, James Tate’s charge had a subsequent winner behind him and he could find further progress for this extra furlong which should suit.
Likely to do better still, he holds solid claims in an open contest and no surprise if he’s competitive again here.
GRIGGY (9/4, Betway) hasn’t finished out of the first four since joining Sean Curran and being equipped with blinkers. The Dandy Man gelding can get back on the winning trail here.
A winner of three of his last five starts, which includes one at this venue, his last win came on his penultimate start when beating Our Man In Havana at Wolverhampton last month.
He scored by three lengths there, and he was subsequently far from disgraced at Kempton latest where he was beaten a similar margin into third. This doesn’t look the strongest of races and he has a good 3lbs claimer up to help with some of his burden so every chance he can make his presence felt here where he could go close.
