TODAY’S IRISH RACING BEST BETS – LISTOWEL TIPS ON TUESDAY 21 SEPTEMBER

2:52 Listowel – Rose Hotel Handicap (Div II) (3yo+ 45-65) 7f

TALKING TOUGH hasn’t won for a while but the Tough As Nails gelding has made the frame in two of his last three starts and he could be capable of ending his drought here.

Michael Mulvany’s charge finished a close runner-up three starts ago at Roscommon and bounced back from a lesser run latest when third at Galway, beaten two lengths by Dragon Of Malta where he wasn’t helped by a wide draw.

Despite that unpromising track position he was only run down in the last half-furlong having made a lot of the running and racing here from the same mark and boasting a much more attractive draw then there’d be little surprise in seeing him turn in a bold bid once more and he can strike here to end his losing run.

3:27 Listowel – Jet & Peggy O’Carroll Memorial (C & G) Maiden (3yo+) 7f

MUTASARREF could take some beating here with Dermot Weld’s charge expected to improve again on his latest runner-up effort at Leopardstown last month.

The Dark Angel gelding was improving on a fair debut fifth when denied only by a nose by River Derwent in that Leopardstown outing and that form was boosted when the winner went close to a follow up in a better race at Galway next time.

First-time cheekpieces are applied now which could elicit some further improvement in the Weld runner and likely to have more to offer he could prove a tough nut to crack in this contest which looks to lack depth.

4:02 Listowel – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap (3yo+) 7f

MAUD GONNE SPIRIT represents a yard that can do little wrong at present and the Intello filly can get back to winning ways here.

Jessica Harrington’s charge was a winner at Galway in July, beating Turbine by a half-length and she has finished runner-up on both subsequent outings includign when finding only the useful Geometrical too good at Tipperary last month.

The handicapper has left her alone in the weights despite those silver medal finishes and there may yet be more improvement to come from her with her yard firing on all cylinders so another big run wouldn’t come as a surprise here.

4:37 Listowel – Edmund & Josie Whelan Memorial Listowel Stakes (Listed Race) (3yo+) 1m1f

ROCA ROMA can get back on the scoresheet having run well when last seen in a Group Three at Tipperary and taking a slight ease in class Ger Lyons’ charge ought to go close.

The Australia filly rounded off last season with a win at Leopardstown in a handicap and she’s been highly tried in a light campaign this season, finishing fifth in the Group Two Lanwades Stud Stakes on her second start before registering a second career victory at Killarney in July where she wore a tongue-strap for the first time.

She found only one too good in the Group Three Fairy Bridge Stakes behind Pearls Galore and that run represents some strong form now given the winner went on to finish runner-up in a Group One next time, while the third filled the same position next time out in the Sceptre Stakes at Doncaster recently.

With her yard in top form at present she ought to make her presence felt here and no surprise if she were to get back to winning ways in this Listed contest.
