Perfect Candidate won nicely on his most recent trip to Exeter and ran a nice enough race on his reappearance in a Veterans Race at Chepstow last month. Fergal O’Brien’s twelve-year-old plummeted down the handicap last season though, and he could have his work cut out giving weight to several talented younger rivals.
For Good Measure is finally starting to find his feet over fences and another strong showing is expected, but I’m happy to take him on with ORCHARDSTOWN CROSS (NAP).
After reaching a rating of just 104 under Tim Vaughan, Orchardstown Cross progressed brilliantly following a move to Jeremy Scott’s stable at the start of last season. A runner-up finish on his stable debut was followed by back-to-back triumphs in three-mile handicaps, where Rex Dingle’s mount dispatched some decent rivals with the minimum of fuss.
Those victories came around two very different tracks in Chepstow and Taunton, so I don’t think Orchardstown Cross will be troubled at all by the challenges poses by Exeter’s course. Scott’s eight-year-old looked like he had plenty left to give during the latter stages of last season and if he returns in a similar vein of form on Tuesday, Orchardstown Cross could be very hard to beat with just 11-00 on his back.
