TIPS FOR GOWRAN PARK – WEDNESDAY IRISH RACING BEST BETS
4:55 Gowran Park – Paulstown Maiden (Plus 10 Race) (3yo+) 1m
AGRIMONY has finished runner-up on both starts either side of an absence and Joseph Murphy’s charge can get off the mark here at the third attempt.
The Pivotal colt was beaten less than one length by Liffey River on debut last September on soft ground at Punchestown over this trip and he showed the benefit of that experience when returing from more than seven months off to fill the same spot behind Wordsworth at the Curragh in April.
That run came over further and on better ground, but he’ll have no problems dropping back in trip here and tackling a softer surface again having handled conditions fine on debut.
Open to plenty of improvement he could prove the one to beat here and every chance he can open his win account now.
5:30 Gowran Park – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Vintage Tipple Stakes (Listed Race) (Fillies & Mares) (4yo+) 1m6f
FLOR DE LA LUNA left behind a poor debut effort to win readily at the Curragh back in October and the Sea The Moon filly subsequently made a good reappearance at Cork last month when finding only one too good in Moll at Cork.
She made most of the running that day but was collared by the winner late on; still she stuck well to the task without quite matching the winner however and this longer trip could of benefit with the potential to eke out further improvement.
Jessica Harrington’s charge had a few of these behind that day and she might have finished closer to the winner last time had she kept a straighter line. The selection is the choice of Shane Foley from the Harrington pair who line up and the pair can combine where she can get back on the scoresheet.
6:00 Gowran Park – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Victor McCalmont Memorial Stakes (Listed Race) (Fillies & Mares) (3yo+) 1m1½f
It might be worth giving another chance to EMPRESS JOSEPHINE who flopped when last seen in the 1000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown two weeks ago but had looked potentially smart the time before when winning on debut.
That success came at Naas in heavy ground where the daughter of Galileo beat New York Angel by just over one length over a one mile trip; she subsequently might have found the drop to seven furlongs and better ground against her last time out where she perhaps lacked a gear late on.
This step up in trip and a return to softer ground could see her quickly bounce back and she remains with plenty of potential judging on her smooth debut success so it wouldn’t be a surprise if she were to turn in a better performance.
7:00 Gowran Park – Thomastown Apprentice Handicap (3yo 45-65) 1m
ELLABELLA posted a career-best effort when finishing runner-up in a handicap at Dundalk last month and stepping up to one mile on turf could see the Pride Of Dubai filly open her account.
Andrew McNamara’s filly went down only by a head on that occasion, proving sharper for her earlier turn reappearance and she had a subsequent winner behind her when just failing to overhaul No Patience where she kept on well to the line.
This extra furlong could produce another jolt of progress and she could exploit this same handicap rating as last time out with a repeat of that last run back on turf.
