Bafana Blue will be all the rage here, and for very good reason. Maurice Barnes’ chaser has shot up the handicap in recent weeks and will be three-pounds well-in when he goes for three in a row on Wednesday.
However, with a seven-pound penalty for his most recent win and ground conditions most certainly against him, I’ll be taking the favourite on with POLYDORA (NAP), who makes his first start in open company having impressed during a consistent novice chasing campaign.
Polydora showed plenty of promise on debut, staying on gamely over 25 furlongs to place third behind two very useful novices’ at Aintree. Tom Lacey’s charge then secured his first victory over the larger obstacles with a strong showing at Newcastle, making all of the running before holding a subsequent winner at arm’s length. Two placed efforts behind De Rasher Counter in high-quality handicaps followed, before Polydora rounded off his season with a lengthy defeat in a Grade Three at Aintree.
A tired effort in a classy handicap at Aintree can be swiftly forgiven and the handicapper’s decision to drop his mark back to 135, having rated Polydora at 142 just two starts ago, makes this a very good opportunity for the punter. Lacey’s charge has relished testing ground in the past and Nico De Boinville has gotten a good tune out of the seven-year-old on both occasions he has been in the saddle. Top-weight may not be enough to stop Polydora upsetting the market leader.
