Form & Verdict
Good-ground Irish point winner last spring; showed only minor promise in bumpers during the autumn but kept on for big-odds second (albeit no threat to winner) on recent hurdle debut at Plumpton (2m, good to soft) and has plenty of scope for improvement over 3m.

Irish point winner in May 2024 (3m, good); best rules run when second in a Plumpton novice hurdle in December last year (2m, good to soft); reportedly made a respiratory noise and stopped quickly when pulled up on chase debut at Hereford last time (2m5f, good); tongue-tie now tried; bit to prove.

Wouldn't have enjoyed the slow ground in two maiden hurdles before finishing a remote second in a Swedish hurdle three weeks ago, as was his second place in a Plumpton novice last winter; plenty too prove now sent chasing, though he did win a point.

Form & Verdict
Bettered disappointing Irish point debut when runner-up on good to yielding ground in April, form that has been well advertised under rules by the winner since; changed hands for £30,000 in May and will need to be taken very seriously if strong in the betting here.

Chased home now-useful rival in an Irish point in April 2024 (good to yielding) but his two hurdling runs this year (3m/2m) have been very underwhelming.

Runner-up in Irish point last April (good to yielding), form that was very well advertised under rules by the winner last season, but was pulled up when 80-1 for rules debut at Ayr (3m, soft) in January and it's hard to know what to expect from him over today's much shorter trip.

Form & Verdict
Irish point winner who was third on rules debut at Kelso (2m, good to soft) in October; shade disappointing when weakening fourth at Wetherby (2m, soft) last month but connections are evidently keen to hike him up to 3m.

Didn't see out 3m when well-held third at Doncaster (good to soft) in March but ran well for a long way and is now back on same mark as for his clear second behind a useful rival there (2m3f, soft) in November; also suited by good ground; could be a tough nut to crack if aided by new cheekpieces.

Won a 2m5f maiden hurdle for James Ewart last season (good); hasn't progressed in handicaps this term and was beaten a long way at Haydock last time (2m5f, good to soft; trainer blamed the ground); each-way chance.

Form & Verdict
Looked promising in bumpers last season and made good start to hurdling career when second to useful rival at Carlisle (2m1f, soft) in October; safely held twice since (2m4f/2m5f) and moves up to 3m with a point to prove but might be aided by first-time tongue-tie today.

Form & Verdict
Point and course bumper winner last season but was soundly beaten on hurdling debut in November (2m) and weakened into well-held third in Kelso mares' race (2m5f, soft) last month; needs today's longer trip to unlock improvement.

Had jumping issues during her chase spell and proved suited by the return to hurdles in C&D contest (good to soft) last time, just holding on from Lizzie Luna who might have won but for coming off a true line; may remain competitive.

Low-mileage 6yo who might well have made a winning chase debut here (2m4f, good) in May, had she not clouted the last two fences; again made jumping errors when well behind Heaven Smart over that trip last month but can pose a potent threat if she gets into a better rhythm today.

0-5 over hurdles but made promising start to chasing career when third over C&D (good) in May; might well have won that race had she not clouted the last two fences, and commands respect off the same mark today.

Verdict

All five runners are tricky to weigh up for one reason or another. Malicash chased home a useful rival on his hurdling debut in October and sets a clear form standard but his next two runs were underwhelming and preference is for Irish point winner CLEARISTHEWATER, who stuck to his task pretty well when second over 2m on last month’s hurdling debut and has travelled from Berkshire to tackle 3m here.[Chris Wilson]
