Form & Verdict
2021 Ballymore fourth whose near-10l third in Listed company on last autumn's chasing debut (2m4f, soft) augured well, despite a couple of mistakes; may pay to forgive a rather weaker effort at Uttoxeter since, if it was simply due to a quick second run after a lengthy layoff; eased 2lb.

Form & Verdict
Never out of the first four when completing in chases but at the same time yet to land one, a few sticky leaps on the way round here last time (3m, soft) not helping; outpaced on both runs at this sort of trip at Exeter last year, and essentially vulnerable to less exposed chasers.

Solid performances in notable handicaps this season, winning the Badger Beers at Wincanton then fourth in the Stayers' Veterans' Final at Sandown and Ladbrokes Trophy over C&D; retains plenty of ability despite his advancing years; respected back down in class.

Jumped well and dominated throughout in the Badger Beers at Wincanton (3m1f, good; handles softer) and gave it another good go off this 8lb higher mark at Sandown; assured competition for the lead here has to reduce his appeal.

Form & Verdict
Uninspiring recent return to chasing three years after his initial ventures over fences, albeit dropped to an inadequate 2m in a Hereford novice last time; eased back to his lowest winning mark over hurdles following that, and step back up to this trip is surely to the good.

Took a big 3m handicap at Haydock in November 2021 but no joy since and he's now a 12yo, absent 573 days before this season and not as good as he was; down the weights too and a close third at Chepstow on penultimate start, but he's not the percentage call.

12yo who isn't as good as he was but he's handicapped accordingly and stayed on for a promising sixth at Haydock (2m3f, soft) in November on his second start back from a long absence; suited by the step back up to 2m7f when 1l third at Chepstow (soft) last month and could be bang there once more.

Form & Verdict
Won his sole Irish point on debut, and while his second of 22 in a Naas hurdle in November 2021 (2m, yielding) for Gordon Elliott wasn't really built on (even in victory) it did underline his effectiveness fresh; absence seldom a concern for one from new yard and he's of real interest.

Maiden hurdle winner (2m, yielding) in Ireland for Gordon Elliott last season; pulled up on stable/chase/handicap debut in January but ran well for a long way at Sandown (2m4f, soft) three weeks ago and there's a decent chance he can take another step forward here.

Soft-ground point winner who won a 2m maiden hurdle at Leopardstown last March for Gordon Elliott; beaten soon after halfway on chase/stable debut at Wetherby (11-2) six weeks ago, returning with an irregular heartbeat; has questions to answer after that, but it's too soon to be writing him off.

Form & Verdict
Made all for both juvenile hurdle wins (2m1f-2m2.5f) in bigger fields than today's; present level of chasing attainment yet to be determined following two tough tasks at the weights and a first-fence fall, but more realistic prospects here although 2lb out of the handicap.

Verdict

This may revolve around the extent to which Bear Ghylls can have his Uttoxeter disappointment simply attributed to a second outing in three weeks following 19 months off, as the Carlisle Listed third which preceded it was very promising, mistakes notwithstanding. Even if back on song, however, an intriguing alternative lurks in the form of PREVARICATE, the only one here yet to run in a chase but 1-1 in Irish points and unlikely to want for match-readiness on debut for Venetia Williams.[Jeremy Grayson]
