Ex-Dan Skelton; started off for Sophie Leech with two disappointing French hurdle runs this summer (wore cheekpieces) but caused a 50-1 shock when back over fences at Worcester (2m4f, good to soft; blinkers) last month; subsequent 4lb rise is not insurmountable if he's in the same form.

Nothing like the force of old but is handicapped accordingly now; dropped another 2lb since last month's very respectable fourth at Ludlow and will be suited by the return to this C&D; can make a bold bid from the front.

11yo who was disappointing at Ayr (2m, soft) last month but posted two respectable performances previously when making the frame at Lingfield (2m4f, good to soft) and Chepstow (2m3f, heavy), and he's been given a chance by the handicapper; could have a part to play.

Scored in first-time cheekpieces at Bangor (2m3f, soft) in December and put a lesser run behind him when winning in first-time blinkers there (2m1f, soft) in February; it's hard to predict how well he'll perform in refitted cheekpieces but the forecast good ground won't be a problem.

Hunter Legend

Reserve; Venetia Williams and Lucy Turner combined to win this at 40-1 in 2022 and this fellow was in pretty good heart over 3m this winter; however, today's stiffer test of stamina poses a question and he was soundly beaten at Ascot (3m, good to soft) last time; wears first-time cheekpieces.

Has posted consistent efforts over 3m of late but gives the impression he ideally needs a drop back in trip, especially when conditions are testing; yet to win beyond an extended 2m6f.

Has done his winning at up to 2m6f; not disgraced over 3m the last twice but gives the impression he ideally needs a drop back in distance, at least when conditions are testing; strong suspicion he's going to be outstayed.

Course winner; a lot of his form is over shorter but he proved his stamina for 3m when runner-up at Ffos Las two weeks ago (good); unlikely to be far away off the same mark.

Produced a remarkable late surge to snatch what had looked an unlikely victory at Fontwell (2m5f, good to soft; blinkers removed) last month but this inconsistent 9yo tends to race lazily nowadays and got going too late when back at Fontwell a fortnight ago; other are much less risky.

Verdict

Mount Tempest could put the pace to the race and should be on the premises when it matters, as when the new blinkers worked well for him at Sandown. However, HUNTER LEGEND (nap) only just missed out when strongly fancied for his chase debut at Ludlow and this half-brother to Cepage can improve for today’s stiffer stamina test. New Found Fame is also a major player.[Alistair Jones]
