Form & Verdict
Won at Hereford (2m5f, soft) last January off 9lb higher; however, it's been a rocky road since and although his stable is among the winners, he was a tailed-off last of seven at Wincanton 11 days ago; pulled up three starts back on latest run over hurdles; goes beyond 2m5f for the first time.

Form & Verdict
Wind surgery seemed to have helped when he came miles clear of tired rivals at Fakenham (3m, soft) last month; not so proficient yet over fences, as he confirmed when pulled up off an unchanged mark at Fontwell one week later, showing worryingly little; back hurdling but with a 9lb higher mark.

Form & Verdict
Can make the running; has a fine record over about 2m5f as a hurdler, including scoring on last two starts in 15-runner race at Doncaster and ten-runner race at Ascot; up another 9lb, having had his rivals well strung out under Cameron Iles at Ascot; possibly best on good or good to soft; his last of his three attempts at about 3m (November 2022) seemed creditable at the time and he has to be in serious calculations for in-form yard.

Irish point win (3m, soft) last April before £40,000 sale; third in maiden hurdles over about 2m4f at Chepstow (good to soft) and Uttoxeter (soft) this autumn on his first two starts under rules; handicap debut at Ascot (2m7f, good; 8-1) was a flop, however, and he now sports cheekpieces.

A win and three places in consecutive runs in September-December 2022 for Harry Whittington, all at about 2m3f-2m5f (unconvincing record over this sort of trip); off 306 days afterwards and the scale of his two defeats this term make him very hard to support; visor replaces usual blinkers.

Form & Verdict
Ex-Irish; minor honours over fences last January-March on all three runs for Mel Rowley; there's more for him to prove over hurdles judged on 2021 and 2022 when last seen in this sphere, but his current hurdles mark is 10lb lower than that over fences; with new yard (same owner) and has a big chance on that 2023 chase form; due to run Plumpton 1.50 yesterday.

Secured the second leg of a four-timer with wide-margin win over C&D (good) in May; now just 2lb above his last winning mark but generally well beaten since (the exception in a four-runner race) and he was tailed off last time; others look more likely.

Verdict

Most of these have been struggling badly for form recently. The shining exception is hat-trick seeking IMMORTAL FAME, whose stamina back over this longer trip can reasonably be questioned but who still gets the vote. It did not appear to be the 3m which beat him when he last tried it in November 2022. Edison Kent’s win by 23l at Fakenham in December (after wind surgery) makes him the big danger but he was ridden with a circuit to go when pulled up over fences one week later. Key Commander looks the most interesting among the rest.[Richard Austen]
