Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Tips 2022

Our Supreme Novices’ Hurdle tips for Day 1 of the Cheltenham Festival 2022 dive into a look at some key competitors in this thrilling spectacle. This race opens the Festival action, and it is a Grade 1 affair for novice hurdlers. Along with some race history, our experts look at the latest odds in this Supreme Novices’ preview.

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Potential Runners & Favourites

The Supreme Novices’ is the race that releases all of that excitement that has built up ahead of the Cheltenham Festival. The curtain-raiser is a hugely popular race. Novice hurdlers take centre stage, and nine runners go to post for this year’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

CONSTITUTION HILL has made a significant impact early in his hurdling career by winning his opening two efforts. After a move to top trainer Nicky Henderson, Constitution Hill won at the first time of asking in a novices’ hurdle at Sandown.

He then delivered the goods after being well-supported for the Tolworth at the same venue in January 2022 and appears to be a prime Supreme Novices’ contender.

DYSART DYNAMO will also put his unbeaten hurdles record on the line at the Cheltenham Festival and warrants respect in Supreme Novices’ Hurdle betting tips.

His victories came on his hurdles debut at Cork and then in the Grade 2 Moscow Flyer at Punchestown. Dysart Dynamo goes for leading trainer Willie Mullins.

JONBON is another that may well make his presence felt. He has been steaming along for trainer Nicky Henderson, winning all three efforts over the timbers. The pick of that form saw him take his form forward to score comfortably in a January Supreme Trial at Haydock.

There are also some Supreme Novices’ Runners with each-way claims. Last year’s Champion Bumper runner-up KILCRUIT finally got his maiden hurdle victory last time out at Punchestown, but the manner of that performance puts him in with a shout in this.

How Often Does a Favourite Horse Win The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Race?

One of the great things about the Supreme Novices’ line-up is that these are unexposed horses in this sphere. That adds a wonderful layer of excitement. None of them will have experienced anything like the environment that awaits them at the Cheltenham Festival.

So it can be an unpredictable race, and the temperaments of the Supreme Novices’ runners will be tested. That unpredictably is underpinned by the fact that there have been only three winning favourites in the last decade of this fixture. There has also been just one in the previous six renewals.

During that span, there has been only one winner at odds bigger than 10/1, so it suggests the pick of the Supreme Novices’ tips will come from the head of the market.

In this Supreme Novices’ Hurdle preview, we next look at some details of this famous race. The Supreme Novices is a Grade 1 fixture for novice hurdlers over a distance of 2m 1/2f on the Old Course.

The race is open to runners 4-years-old and up, while fillies and mares get a 7lb allowance. There are eight hurdles in the Supreme Novices’, a race that was introduced in 1946. This year’s prize purse is £135,000.

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Jockey & Trainer Records

Ruby Walsh still holds the record for the most wins in the Supreme Novices’ after landing six victories. The final one of those was on Klassical Dream in 2019 before Walsh called it a day and retired. Nico de Boinville has won 2 of the last 20 renewals and is the only current jockey to win it more than once in that period.

The leading trainer, who often paired up with Walsh, is Willie Mullins with his seven victories. Five of those have been since the 2013 renewal, and the trainer’s entries naturally pique interest in Supreme Novices’ Hurdle 2022 tips. Meanwhile, Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls have trained two winners in the last 20 years.
