Glorious Goodwood Day 4 Tips: Your Guide to the King George Day & More

The highlight of Friday’s Goodwood card is the Group 2 King George Stakes over five furlongs. The race has seen plenty of big-name winners, including Battaash who won the race four years in a row between 2017-2020. There doesn’t appear to be a clear favourite for the race this year so we could be in for a cracking race.

The Golden Mile will be the big betting race for Goodwood day 4 tips. A race that Her Majesty The Queen won with joint-favourite Seniority in 2018. There are also two Group 3 races on a high-quality card including the Glorious Stakes, won by Poet’s Word in 2017. He went on to win the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.

13.50 Goodwood Tips: Goodwood Handicap Stakes (3yo+) 2m4f

King George day starts with the extended 2m4f Goodwood Handicap. The extreme distance of this race means that this is a logical target for National Hunt or dual-purpose horses. Lil Rockerfeller was favourite to win the race for the second consecutive season in 2019 but he faded in the closing stages behind Sir Mark Prescott’s Timoshenko. The race has a habit of throwing up big priced winners, with horses priced up at 16/1, 25/1 and 33/1 all winning in recent renewals. That could be something to bear in mind for anyone looking for Goodwood day 4 tips.

14.25 Goodwood Tips: Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes (3yo) (Group 3) 1m

The betting can be a good guide to this race with four of the last six renewals going to the race favourite. Tilsit (10/1) bucked that trend slightly when landing the spoils in 2020. The key trial for this race is the Sir Henry Cecil Stakes at Newmarket. Montiridge (2013), Beat The Bank (2017), Duke Of Hazzard (2019) and last year’s winner Baaeed (2021)  had all been successful in that race before winning here.

Goodwood Tips Golden Mile

The Golden Mile is one of the most valuable handicaps of the season and there will be a wide range of Glorious Goodwood day 4 tips on this race. There have been some big gambles in the past including Franklin D who returned at just 7/4 in 2016. He was the only outright favourite to win in the ten years prior to Prompting’s (3/1f) victory in 2020. Last year’s race was won impressively by Maydanny (8/1) to give Mark Johnston his first win in the race since 2007.

This race always attracts a large field and that can leave high numbers at a big disadvantage. Horses drawn 9 or lower have won 9 of the last 10 renewals. Key trials for this race include the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot and the John Smith’s Cup at York. Check out our Goodwood day 4 tips for our expert analysis on the Golden Mile.

15.35 Goodwood Tips: King George Qatar Stakes (3yo plus) (Group 2) 5f

The imperious Battaash is the most successful horse in the race, having won it an astonishing four years in a row, between 2017 and 2020. He failed to land the spoils last year however, only finishing seventh. Suesa ran out an impressive winner for French trainer Francois Rohaut – the first time a French trainer has won the race.

Shock results are very rare in the King George with Take Cover (2016) at 8-1 being the biggest price in the past ten years. He was winning the race for a second time at the age of nine. Other notable winners include Soba (1983), Lochsong (1993, 1994) and Kingsgate Native (2009).

16.10 Goodwood Tips: L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Glorious Stakes (4yo+) (Group 3) 1m4f

Sir Michael Stoute has farmed this race in recent years with victories for Kings Fete (2016), Poet’s Word (2017) and Mirage Dancer (2018). The latter was the odds-on favourite in 2019 but was beaten by Desert Encounter (15-2). However, the 2020 renewal was won by William Haggas with Pablo Escobarr and the most recent running was won by Passion And Glory, who just managed to hold off the late challenge from Euchen Glen.

Four of the last six runnings have been won by favourites, including last year. This race is one to look towards the head of the betting, with the biggest-priced winner in the last ten years being Desert Encounter, who won at 15/2.

16.45 Goodwood Tips: Nursery Handicap Stakes (2yo) 6f

This can be a tricky race for Goodwood day 4 tips with just three successful favourites in the past ten years. However, that does include last year, as Ever Given (4/1) ran out a convincing winner. Flying Bear (2013) provided a 25/1 shock while Jamesbo’s Girl (2012) at 16/1 and Don Armado (2018) at 11/1 were also big-odds winners of the race.

17.20 Goodwood Tips: TDN Australia Handicap (3yo) 1m 3f

Goodwood day 4 tips for King George day’s finale have had their fair share of success, despite the competitive nature of this race. Subsequent Group 1 winner Poet’s Word (2016) started 7/4 favourite for Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore. The same combination teamed up with the well-backed Kinyras (2011). Last year’s race was won again by Ryan Moore, but on board the William Haggas trained Wink Of An Eye (11/4).
