Form & Verdict
Much-improved after two initial outings last season; second in a C&D maiden before landing a 1m Listowel nursery; had enough speed to win over 6f at the Curragh on his next start; signed off with third placing in a valuable 7f conditions event at Naas; seems versatile in terms of going as well as trip; capable of going close.

Confirmed his liking for this venue when winning a Listed race here last season (Mutasarref a neck behind), his second C&D win; improving for each outing this season and should run his race but a rating of 99 leaves him with a fair amount to find with a few of these rivals.

Won this in 2023; consistent stakes performer with seven wins; won Heritage Stakes last season, beating Mutasarref by a neck; best subsequent effort came when fourth in Minstrel Stakes in July; two starts this season, improved from return to be beaten 3.25l behind The Lion In Winter at Leopardstown seven days ago; down in trip; mightn't want the ground too testing but shouldn't be far away and trainer has good course record.

Seven career wins include this race last season, when he got up in the last strides to deny the odds-on favourite Mutasarref; produced his best subsequent effort when fourth in the Minstrel Stakes at the Curragh last July; dropped away tamely in the 7f Gladness Stakes at the Curragh on seasonal debut.

Form & Verdict
Much the best of his three runs at two when chasing home subsequent Group 1 winner Auguste Rodin at Naas; disappointing at Dundalk on final start; acted well on very soft ground when beating 19 rivals on his seasonal debut in a maiden over this trip at the Curragh; form was boosted by a good win for runner-up Something Nice at Cork last Saturday.

Form & Verdict
Won a Roscommon maiden on his third start, wearing a tongue-tie for the first time; did not seem inconvenienced by heavy ground when second in a five-runner Cork nursery; found the competition too demanding in a Listed race at Dundalk on final start; tongue-tie left off for seasonal debut.

Ended winless 2025 campaign with a placed effort in an above-average seller; starts his 2026 season off 8lb below his last winning mark but chance partly depends on the weather as he's best on ground softer than good.

All five wins have been on good or slower including over C&D; hasn't been at his best this season but there have been some respectable efforts and he didn't get the breaks in a hot seller at Chester (5l third of eighth) 12 days ago; continues to drop down the weights and he could be dangerous back in a handicap.

Off the mark in a 5.5f Bath handicap in June (firm) during a short tenure with Mick Appleby, and almost cashed in his lower mark on synthetics at Kempton latest (6f; stable debut), but mixed messages previously as to whether he truly stays 7f; jockey rode first double on Monday night.

Ex-Irish 3yo who won one of his three runs for Mick Appleby, a fast-ground Bath handicap over their extended 5f; best form is on turf but a lower AW rating heightens interest on stable debut (bought for 10,000gns).

Off the mark at the 12th attempt (second for this yard) when keeping on well to win a 5.5f handicap at Bath last week; has form over this longer trip but he'll need further progress if he's to defy a 6lb penalty.

Verdict

An interesting little contest featuring three previous winners. SHADOWED has the advantage of race-fitness and the form of his Curragh maiden win has been boosted by the runner-up in winning readily at Cork. Lord Massusus has slightly stronger credentials than Spirit Genie but has to give him 3lb. [Alan Sweetman]
