Reappeared with good second at Uttoxeter (2m7f, soft) in November and he's not ruled out, but this 9yo has a patchy profile nowadays and was soundly beaten at Sandown (2m7f) last time on heavy ground he should have handled.

Stays and his two wins in handicap hurdles came on heavy; lightly raced in recent seasons but close second of five at Uttoxeter (soft) 13 days ago was an upturn in his fortunes and he is very well handicapped on old form.

Had interesting times over fences, a wide-margin winner on one occasion from five attempts but pulled up three times and finished remote on the other; dropped right out on return to hurdles in November but she did run well in this race in 2020 before winning it the following year and is lower in the weights than for either of those runs; cannot ignore.

A case of all or nothing over fences earlier in the year, a 41l success at Bangor (3m, good to soft) in March surrounded by four modest efforts; has dropped 4lb lower than when last winning over hurdles, though, and won't have a problem with the trip or likely testing ground; shortlisted.

Well held when fifth in this race in 2021 and 2022; C&D third when last seen in March but he was way behind the first two and he's now failed to win since New Year's Day 2020, despite his move down the weights.

Has struggled to find his best since returning from nearly two years away but last month's fourth at Wincanton, when not quite seeing out 2m5f+, was a definite step in the right direction; could well be involved.

Always towards rear when tried in cheekpieces two starts ago and was left behind when pace lifted in home straight here (2m4f; no headgear) last month; can't be supported with much confidence today but is now 12lb lower than when very respectable fourth at Taunton (2m3f, soft) in January.

Both wins gained at Uttoxeter; can take plenty of driving and again he raced lazily when tailed off at Fontwell on final sighting last May; goes on the ground and stays well, but others appeal more.

Progressive 2212 record in handicap hurdles; scored in gritty fashion at Ascot (nearly 3m1f) in November and put up another most tenacious performance when beaten a head, having made most, over an extended 2m7f there (again on good; probably acts on soft) one month later; up another 5lb but surely won't go down without a fight.

Verdict

Most of these have something to prove but not SCAMALLACH LIATH, who not only comes here in form but appeals as a likely improver over this far. It’s questionable what Skandiburg achieved last time at Newbury but he could be the threat.[Alistair Jones]
