£20,000 May 3yo; 33-1, came from off the pace when about 17l seventh of 15 in bumper at Exeter (1m5f, good to soft) in October; may be a longer-term project but market can guide.

Hasn't got a lot going in his previous four chases but well handicapped on some of his hurdle form and didn't run too badly in that discipline last time.

Very opposable on this season's exploits but he has dropped to a dangerous mark and this 6yo could stage a revival at some point; worth checking the betting.

Made disappointing start to chasing career this season (three attempts) and reverted to hurdling with a heavy defeat and a fall last month; lurks on a good mark but needs to turn a corner.

Fourth foal; dam once-raced sister to French 2m1f hurdle winner Amstrong Springs, half-sister to French winners Nan's Catch (2m2f hurdle) and End Of Spring (1m6f-2m1f hurdle); newcomer from a stable going strongly; hooded but needs a market check.

Lightly raced 4yo who was close up in the second of two handicap hurdles (2m3f, good) but was poised to better that by some way when misjudging the second last and coming down on his chase debut at Bangor (2m1f, soft) 22 days ago; major player if none the worse.

Sixth foal; half-brother to winners Galahad Quest (useful 2m1f hurdle/2m4f chase) and Iliade Allen (bumper); dam unraced half-sister to French 2m2f Grade 3 hurdle winner Une Destine; 22-1, carried out just after the first hurdle in a Grade 2 juvenile hurdle race at Cheltenham 13 days ago; interesting to see his market strength in this race, which is surely much weaker.

1-5 over fences; bumped into a handicap blot when 14l second at Newbury (extended 2m7f, heavy) and early mistakes/interference had him on the back foot when only 11-1 for the Ultima at Cheltenham (4lb out of the weights); with trip/ground fine, he can go well here.

Kept on for creditable fourth of five in novice chase here (2m4f, good) in January when up against it at the weights and he may have bumped into a handicap blot when 14l second at Newbury (extended 2m7f, heavy) last month; this unexposed 6yo is not ruled out each-way, despite being 4lb wrong.

This looks stronger than the 2m4f handicap chase he won here (good to soft; fine on soft) in December off 5lb lower but he ran well in the face of a stiff task at the weights at Cheltenham a month ago; each-way claims back up in trip.

Yet to finish off a race especially strongly, including when a 50l last of seven on last month's C&D return (good); latest 5lb drop isn't sufficiently persuasive.

Hard to make a case after finishing tailed off when 40-1 for his handicap debut (2m3f, soft; first-time tongue-tie); did show a smidgeon of promise on good ground last year but he's unconvincing.

25-1, beaten by the turn for home on debut at Ludlow (good; beaten 41l) in October; quite a turnaround, therefore, when winning a five-runner race at Fakenham (2m, good to soft) six weeks later easily by 11l, always prominent; appeals most of those who have run.

Didn't show much here on debut before winning easily at Fakenham (2m, good to soft) when Circle Of Hope was well behind; this is clearly much easier than her latest Listed assignment at Aintree where the ground was heavy; not the easiest to assess and she does have a penalty.

Verdict

Skelton filly VIRGINIA LODGE is preferred to Summer Night City among the two last-time-out winners but beating so few rivals has to cool enthusiasm somewhat for both of them. A close look is therefore recommended for Knight Of Allen, who made such a brief appearance in a Grade 2 on his debut, and on the newcomer Copernic Du Mazet.[Richard Austen]
