Returned from layoff with two respectable hurdle runs at start of this year (2m3f/3m3f) but performed very poorly in a recent chase; long in the tooth now and not the percentage call today; cheekpieces refitted.

Form & Verdict
Fairly useful chaser who enjoyed a revival and won twice last season (2m4f, good to soft/soft); switches back to hurdling on a tempting mark but not seen since a poor run in the autumn and today's ground will probably be slower than ideal.

Had excuses when safely held on handicap debut in January (3m) and was seen to better effect when keeping-on third at Huntingdon (2m3f, soft) last month; no surprise if today's move back up in trip unlocks the necessary improvement.

Ex-Irish mare who was beaten beaten 20l and 25l in four slow-ground maidens towards end of 2023 (2m-2m7f); open to improvement in handicaps for new stable this year and, with Olly Murphy running two, the market may provide some clues.

Form & Verdict
In good form for new yard since the autumn, most notably when winning by 12l at Huntingdon (3m1f, soft) two runs ago; managed only third when warm favourite for Stratford race won by Goguenard last month (2m6f, heavy) and effectively 1lb higher here but still features prominently in calculations.

Form & Verdict
Won over hurdles at Sedgefield (2m1f, good) in the autumn and has been placed under Lily Jones in two AW handicaps for new stable since but consistency is not his strong suit; well beaten when reverted to hurdling at Taunton (2m3f, soft) recently and would appeal much more on better ground.

Now only 1lb higher than when scoring at Sedgefield (2m1f, good) for Milton Harris a year ago but both recent runs for Sylvester Kirk were disappointing and he needs to have been perked up by latest stable switch; cheekpieces refitted.

3-4 since switched to handicaps this year, the latest win gained at Stratford (2m6f, heavy) last month; recent 6lb rise probably demands further progress, but he's likely to give this a very good shot from the front.

Form & Verdict
1m6f Flat winner in the autumn (soft ground; RPR 81); ultimately well beaten on all three hurdling starts for new stable this year but significant positives can be taken from last month's fourth of 15 at Huntingdon (2m3f, soft), and he's open to further improvement in handicap hurdles.

Came good at Fontwell (2m5f, good) in March and probably bettered that performance when close second at Newton Abbot (2m5f, heavy) in April; reportedly not suited by the sharp track at Cartmel when very disappointing favourite last month but might bounce back in new headgear here and is evidently versatile ground-wise.

Arrives on the up for his current yard, scoring at Fontwell (2m5f) in March before an excellent second of nine in 2m5f handicap at Newton Abbot the following month; he was a fair 1m6f Flat winner so merits serious consideration despite a 3lb weights rise.

Verdict

Goguenard (second choice) has made very good progress since switched to handicaps this year, while Pipers Cross also arrives here in good form and Colonel Whizz is open to improvement over today’s trip. However, the suggestion is handicap hurdle debutant MILITARY TYCOON, who seemed to be getting the hang of hurdling when running well for a long way at Huntingdon last month and, if his Flat form is a guide, could be on a very good mark.[Chris Wilson]
