Form & Verdict
Three consecutive wins at 1m2f and 1m4f (on good and heavy ground) in the spring and perhaps there was more in it than another weights rise when only fifth at Epsom (1m4f, good to soft) in June; now back down in grade and trip so could resume progress.

Ex-French; had a hurdles campaign before winning at Windsor (good), Salisbury (heavy; by 10l) and Ascot (good) on his three Flat starts this spring; the last named was on step up to 1m4f, coming from mid-division to take a 14-runner race; racing freely is the worry but no shock if he can cope with another 5lb rise.

2-2 this season, winning Class 5 contests over 1m2f at Windsor (good) and Salisbury (heavy), latterly by 10l last Sunday; leading player provided he stays this new trip and copes with the higher grade; appears well treated under 5lb penalty.

Form & Verdict
Has done very well on AW for this yard; there were serious questions about his lack of turf experience at Goodwood recently but he confounded the doubters with an excellent third to a progressive one (1m2f, soft); this stiffer track asks another question but less testing ground can suit.

Excellent AW strike-rate at 1m-1m2f for this yard but he's only ever run twice on turf and he couldn't keep up the gallop when third of eight at Haydock (1m2f, good) this month, when a first-time visor replaced cheekpieces; could eventually get to grips with grass but others more likely.

Eight-time AW winner; finished third at Chelmsford (1m2f) the last twice, showing he's back in better form; holds place claims provided he takes to new headgear and proves as good back on turf (second attempt).

Form & Verdict
Multiple turf winner who suffered in the weights for Goodwood success (1m2f, soft; has won on good) last August; mostly struggled in 2024 and was out the back in that same Goodwood race last time; up against it.

Two of his last three wins have come on this track (good and soft ground), the latest in this race last year; hit heavily for the wide-margin win and has rather ebbed and flowed since but he's only just above that winning mark and a solid effort can be expected.

Runner-up in this race in 2021 and has scored twice in subsequent visits to this track, latterly over 1m2f on soft last August off 3lb lower than today; second at Newbury in April was a good start to 2024 and he's considered each-way despite the rather mixed fortunes since.

Form & Verdict
Won 1m2f AW maiden as 3yo; handicap career has yet to catch fire but he did look as if a stiffer test at the trip would suit when a keeping-on third of eight at Doncaster (good to firm; first-time visor, retained) last month; very likely to be competitive.

Form & Verdict
Mixed record but useful 1m4f handicap form at Chester in May; had a serious off day next time but ran well enough in a 1m4f AW novice last month and looks worth another go at 1m2f; not ruled out; cheekpieces fitted.

Plenty of promise in four of his first five starts as when chasing home two next-time-out winners at Chester (1m4f, good) in May; however, he then ran poorly at Leicester (1m4f, good to soft) since when he has been gelded; needs to bounce back now switched to the AW.

Verdict

Crystal Mariner (second best) is respected on a track that should suit with Ryan Moore back in the saddle and delaying his departure but a mark in the mid-80s didn’t look beyond KOTARI in a higher grade at Epsom last time out and he could be all the better for a subsequent break. Diderot also has possibilities but although Zealot ran a stormer at Goodwood recently this stiffer track asks another question, especially if the ground eases.[Emily Weber]
