Form & Verdict
Ended a 14-race losing run when narrowly getting the better of a frustrating sort at Wolverhampton (5f, Tapeta) a fortnight ago; only 1lb higher, but he didn't run very well in his only previous visit here which could be a worry; stable also runs Almaty Star.

Always tended to be hot and cold in the past, so disappointing he didn't fare better at Lingfield (AW) latest given a decent record there; not a lot of wiggle room off this mark and is now tried in first-time cheekpieces (wore blinkers twice as a 2yo).

Two wins and a close second to his name in four runs over C&D; tended to be hot and cold in the past, twice winning back-to-back, which bodes well after bouncing back off 4lb lower at Yarmouth last time; goes well for Luke Morris too.

Form & Verdict
Successful in his first three visits here, but he lost his unbeaten course record when only sixth of eight over C&D ten days ago, albeit that was in 0-105 company; should get the strong pace he needs and a bigger effort is anticipated back down at this level.

Won at Goodwood (5f, good) in the spring and has remained in form, second of seven at Lingfield last time; no obvious reason why he won't be thereabouts again but he's fully exposed after 52 starts.

Record of 1-20 on turf but that win was off 1lb lower at Goodwood in May; hasn't matched that form in three subsequent runs but he ran into a well-handicapped rival when a 4l second at Salisbury (5f, good to firm) last time; now drops back into a Class 5 event and he's not ruled out.

Form & Verdict
C&D maiden winner as a 2yo who completed a four-timer over 5f on the AW last winter; back to form when beaten a short head and a head into third of nine at Wolverhampton (5f, Tapeta) last month and races off the same mark; contender if backing that up.

Not been with Chris Gordon for long and he has run two good races for the yard, finishing second at Windsor before getting the better of Washington Heir over 5.3f here 16 days ago; whether he can prove quite so effective over 6f remains to be seen.

Form & Verdict
Established trailblazer whose record over C&D reads 132, only going down by a neck on his return from 99 days off last month; the winner didn't do much for the form back here a week ago, but he could still be hard to catch if left alone in front.

Verdict

Almaty Star seems to like this C&D (record 122) so makes the shortlist, as does fellow C&D winner Diomed Spirit who bounced back to form last time. Mc Loven will be a big danger to all if let loose on the lead, but another chance is given to THE THAMES BOATMAN. He lost his unbeaten course record last time, but that was in a 0-105 contest and he should find this somewhat easier.[David Bellingham]
