Brown Advisory Novices’ Potential Runners & Favourites
It’s always worth browsing through the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase runners because there could be a future Cheltenham Gold Cup winner in there somewhere. This is an important race at the Festival, and past Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase winners include the likes of Denman, Bobs Worth, and Might Bite.
BRAVEMANSGAME has gone from strength to strength in his chasing career, notably running out a comfortable winner in the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase on Boxing Day. He’s a deserved market leader.
L’HOMME PRESSE remains unbeaten over fences (4-4), including a demolition job in the Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase. A similar performance here and he will no doubt go close.
CAPODANNO could pique some interest with his entry. He got off the mark at the first time of asking over the fences with a beginners chase victory in December. He was then second only to Bob Olinger at Punchestown before a mistake let him down at Leopardstown while chasing the leader in a race won by Galopin Des Champs.
The field will settle down when final entries are confirmed a little closer to the start because some key players in this one also hold early entries to other races. Scanning the market, other options like BEACON EDGE and AHOY SENOR jump off the page and rate as potential dangers.

Brown Advisory Novices’ History & Present Time
The Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase was introduced in 1946, and it is hosted on the Old Course at Cheltenham on Day 2. There is a distance of 3m in play for the race with twenty fences for the novice chasers to get over.
It used to be called the Broadway Novices, its official name. But sponsors have played a big part, and that’s where the Brown Advisory name comes from.
The race is open to 5-year-olds, and above, and mares get a 7lb weight allowance. This race has seen some of its winners go on to touch Cheltenham Gold Cup glory like Bobs Worth and Lord Windermere.
Brown Advisory Novices’ Jockey & Trainer Records
We have to go back in history a fair way to find the jockey that holds the title for the most wins in this Chase. That is Pat Taaffe, who won it five times. One of those was on the back of the late great Arkle in 1963.
From a more modern angle, Davy Russell is the only active jockey to have won the race on more than occasion (3).
In the last two decades, trainers Willie Mullins and Nicky Henderson are locked together on four Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase winners. Only Paul Nicholls has managed to produce more than one in that span (3).
But it is Mullins who is the outright leading trainer with five wins which started back in 1998 with Florida Peal.
