Glorious Goodwood Tips Day 2: Your Guide to Sussex Stakes Day

The second day of Glorious Goodwood features the Group 1 Sussex Stakes, one of the most prestigious mile races of the season. The race often attracts the best three-year-old milers who clash with older generations. Many of the greatest milers in history are featured on the roll of honour including Brigadier Gerard (1971), Kris (1979), Giant’s Causeway (2000) and Rock of Gibraltar (2002).

Khalid Abdullah’s Frankel (2011, 2012) became the first horse to win the Sussex Stakes twice. That record is likely to remain intact with last year’s Sussex Stakes winner, Alcohol Free, set to face the likes of Baaeed, Coroebus and Native Trail.

The supporting card includes the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes which features some of the fastest juveniles in training. Our Goodwood day 2 tips will start at the opposite end of the spectrum with the longest race of the day, the Goodwood Handicap over two and a half miles.

13.50 Goodwood Tips: Coral Handicap Stakes (3yo) 1m4f

Glorious Goodwood day 2 begins with a 1m4f handicap which is consigned to three-year-olds. Roger Varian’s Nagano ran out a game winner of the race last year, holding off the challenge of Siskany. He then just missed out in the Group 3 March Stakes back at Goodwood the following month, just failing to catch Dancing King but finishing ten lengths clear of the rest of the runners.

14.25 Goodwood Tips: The Whispering Angel Oak Tree Stakes (3yo+) (Group 3) 7f

The first Group race on Glorious Goodwood day 2 is a contest for fillies and mares over seven furlongs. The 2020 renewal saw favourite backers rewarded thanks to One Master’s last gasp victory. Howeverm last year’s winner was a bit of a shock as Last Empire caused an upset, winning at 16/1. She became the first 5-y-o to win the race since Selfish all the way back in 1999. Since 2000 only one other horse has won the race aged 5 or older – that was One Master in 2020. Other than that, the race has been won by 3 or 4 year olds this millenium.

15.00 Goodwood Tips: Molecomb Stakes (2yo) (Group 3) 5f

The Molecomb Stakes has been won by some very speedy two-year-olds in the past. The brilliant Marwell won here in 1980 and other notable winners include Risky (1993), Kachy (2015) and Yalta (2016). Richard Hannon’s Armor (6/1) ran out an impressive winner of the race last year, powering away from the field to win by 3 and a quarter lengths.

15.35 Goodwood Tips: Qatar Sussex Stakes (3yo+) (Group 1) 1m

The Sussex Stakes is rightly billed as the race of the week with a cracking line-up in prospect. The unbeaten superstar Baaeed rightly heads the betting for it, having won all eight of his races to date – including FOUR Group 1’s. His main market rival in the Sussex Stakes betting is Coroebus, who has won the 2000 Guineas and the St James’s Palace Stakes already this season.

Another likely contender is 2000 Guineas runner-up Native Trail, who may have won that race given a better draw. He redeemed himself in the Irish equivalent, before just failing in the Coral-Eclipse on his first attempt at 1m 2f. This step back in trip should see him back to his best and he looks in with a big chance.

Last year’s winner Alcohol Free looks the most dangerous female representative having last been seen winning the July Cup at Newmarket’s July Festival. However, there’s only been one horse to win this race two times, and that was Frankel!

Favourites have a mixed record in the Sussex Stakes with 5 victories in the past 10 years. Shock results are rare, although Here Comes When won at 20/1 in 2017 when revelling in his favoured heavy ground.

16.10 Goodwood Tips: EBF Fillies’ Stakes (2yo) 1m 2f

This is a tricky race for Goodwood tips day 2 with two of the last three winners winning at double-figure odds. Simon Crisford’s Mannaal (12/1) won it in 2019, before Chamade (22/1) won the race in 2020 for Ralph Beckett. Andrew Balding’s Achelois (3/1) won last year’s renewal, running on well to beat Timeless Soul (2nd) and Freyja (3rd).

16.45 Goodwood Tips: Alice Keppel Fillies’ Condition Stakes (3yo+) 5f

There has only been three runnings of this race. The inaugural running of the race in 2019 was won by Mrs Bouquet (3/1) for trainer Mark Johnston. In 2020, Miss Jingles (7/2) won for Charlie Appleby and William Buick. Last year saw Karl Burke’s Illustrating (2/1) run out a game winner. Although there has only been three runnings of the race, it’s clear that it pays to back one towards the head of the betting!

17.20 Goodwood Tips: World Pool Handicap (3yo+) 7f

The final race on day 2 of Glorious Goodwood is another competitive event with only two successful favourites in the past ten seasons. One was Magic City, trained by Richard Hannon Snr and it could pay to stick with the Hannon team for your Goodwood tips in the lucky last!

  • 2018 – Medahim (7/1) trained by Richard Hannon.
  • 2019 – Dirty Rascal (7/1) trained by Richard Hannon.
  • 2020 – Toro Strike (3/1) trained by Richard Fahey.
  • 2021 – Magical Wish (12/1) trained by Richard Hannon.
