Glorious Goodwood Tips Day 3: Your Guide to the Magnolia Cup & Nassau Stakes Day
The Group 1 Nassau Stakes is the feature race on Glorious Goodwood day 3, traditionally known as Ladies’ day. The late Sir Henry Cecil trained Midday to win this race for three consecutive seasons between 2009 and 2011. Other notable winners include Crimplene (2000), Ouija Board (2006), The Fugue (2012) and Minding (2016).
Thursday’s card also features a trial for the St Leger in the Gordon Stakes and some smart two-year-olds in the Richmond Stakes. The Magnolia Cup precedes the first race, a popular charity event for lady riders that received plenty of media coverage in 2019. Khadijah Mellah became the first woman to ride in a race in Britain wearing a hijab and duly romped home in front on 25-1 outsider Haverland.

13.50 Goodwood Tips: Kincsem Handicap Stakes (3yo) 1m2f
Well-backed horses had dominated this race in recent years with favourites Forest Of Dean (2019) and Communique (2018) rewarding favourite backers. The rulebook was thrown out in 2021, however, with Junkanoo causing a huge 50/1 upset for Gary Moore and connections. Last year saw a convincing winner as Qaader (8/1) bolted up under an excellent ride from Jim Crowley. Check out our Goodwood day 3 tips to see whether we’re backing another big-odds winner.
14.25 Goodwood Tips: Richmond Stakes (2yo) (Group 2) 6f
The Richmond Stakes has been won by some top quality juveniles in the past. Bachir (1999) went on to win the Irish 2000 Guineas the following season. The last horse to win the Richmond Stakes and go on to win an English Classic was Palestine who won the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in 1950.
Other notable winners include Dick Turpin (2009) and Shalaa (2015). The 2019 renewal was won by Golden Horde (15/2) for Clive Cox and Adam Kirby, the winner of the following season’s Group 1 Commonwealth Cup. That duo teamed up once again to land the 2020 renewal with Supremacy, but failed to land the hat-trick as the Alan King trained Asymmetric won last year. Favourites have won four of the last ten runnings and the biggest priced winner during that same time period was Heavy Metal at 9/1 back in 2012.
15.00 Goodwood Tips: Gordon Stakes (3yo) (Group 3) 1m4f
The Gordon Stakes often attracts horses that have failed in the Epsom Derby and is regarded as a St Leger trial. Millenary (2000), Sixties Icon (2006) and Conduit (2008) all won both races. The Gordon Stakes was also won by subsequent Group 1 winners Harbinger (2009), Noble Mission (2012), Highland Reel (2015), Ulysses (2016), Crystal Ocean (2017) and Mogul (2020).
Last years winner Ottoman Emporor (11/1) was the longest priced winner of the Gordon Stakes in the past 10 years. The race is usually dominated by the market leaders with all but two of the last ten winners being in the first three in the Goodwood betting.
15.35 Goodwood Tips: Qatar Nassau Stakes (3yo+) (Group 1) 1m2f
The Nassau Stakes is a top target for horses that ran well in the Epsom Oaks, Minding winning both races in 2016 and Tuesday could bid to win both races this year. John Gosden, Sir Michael Stoute and Aidan O’Brien have all enjoyed plenty of success in this race and any leading contenders from these stables should be noted for your Nassau Stakes tips.
Three-year-olds have a fine record in the race, winning six of the last nine renewals of the Nassau. Japanese raider Deirdre (5yo) and last year’s winner Lady Bowthorpe (5yo) are the only two horses to beat the classic generation’s stranglehold in recent runnings of the Nassau Stakes. This year’s renewal looks set to go to another 3yo, with Nashwa a hot favourite, plus Inspiral and Tuesday in with lively chances.
16.10 Goodwood Tips: Jaeger-Lecoultre Nursery Handicap (2yo) 7f
The two go-to stables in this race in recent years have been those of Richard Hannon and Mark Johnston. The duo have sent out four of the last six winners of this race, including Mark Of The Man – who was a 12/1 winner for Richard Hannon in 2020. However, it was Simon & Ed Crisford who won the race last year with 13/2 shot Aswan.
16.45 Goodwood Tips: World Pool Handicap Stakes (3yo) 5f
There have been some long priced winners of this race including Pal Of The Cat (2013) at 20/1 and Indescribable (2015) at 18/1. In 2020, Glamorous Anna (9/1) won and last year’s race was won by Whenthedealinsdone (8/1). An interesting trend is horses winning from high draws – with six of the last seven winners all drawn in stalls 7, 8 or 9.
17.20 Goodwood Tips: EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (2yo) 7f
Glorious Goodwood Day 3 ends with this typically competitive seven-furlong Fillies maiden. Spirit of Bermuda (8/1) won in 2020 for William Haggas and Tom Marquand, before last year’s renewal went the way of Wilderness Girl (7/4) under a typically classy William Buick ride.
