Form & Verdict
Fourth in this race last year off the same mark; fine efforts when runner-up in February on first two starts (2m, AW) since rejoining this yard, but reportedly made a respiratory noise next time and, following his third wind operation, he was a soundly beaten outsider in Listed race four weeks ago; others seem more solid.

Fine efforts when runner-up in 2m AW handicaps in February on first two starts since rejoining this yard; reportedly made a respiratory noise at Musselburgh in April and he's had a third wind operation since; however, even if returning to form, a career-best if needed from this 6yo today.

A poor show last May prompted a second wind operation and it was a solid campaign otherwise; never better than when second this February in 2m AW handicaps at Wolverhampton and Lingfield, but peak turf form isn't far behind it and he'll probably be on the premises.

Tricky to settle and is held up in rear; won the Cesarewitch at Newmarket (2m2f, good to firm; 9lb higher today) last October and had some very solid AW form over 1m2f-2m this year; back to near his best when eighth of 20 at Royal Ascot (2m4f) but he needs to hit a new high if he's to win this.

Won the Cesarewitch at Newmarket (2m2f, good to firm; 9lb higher today) last October and had some very solid AW form over 1m2f-2m this year; not nearly so good in his two races back on turf but his recent run at Epsom (1m2f) should have teed him up nicely for this; current mark and tactical issues coming from the rear are the chief worries.

Acts on good to soft, much more to prove on soft; won the Cesarewitch at Newmarket (2m2f, good to firm; 10lb higher today) last October and had some very solid AW form over 1m2f-2m this year, prior to tailing off at 50-1 in the Group 3 Ormonde at Chester four weeks ago; he's not on a bad mark but plenty needs to go right if one of his late rushes is to prevail in this.

Third in this race last year off 3lb higher; competitive only once (Saudi Arabia in February) from six starts this year and there's been no win for very nearly three years, so he's far from being the percentage call.

Close up in a Saudi Arabian 1m7f handicap in February (latest run in a tongue-tie that now returns) but that form is none too persuasive in a race of this nature and he's hardly hit the ground running back in Britain; only eighth in this last year off 2lb higher; one for the optimists.

Form & Verdict
All the rage in the betting for his first two starts this season, with the line coming a touch too soon on first occasion (1m2f); rather muted on the step up to 1m4f behind Wine Dark Sea at Ascot (good to firm) next time but the combination of 1m6f and first-time headgear worked a treat at Goodwood (good) seven weeks ago when he travelled much the best on his way to a tidy win; 5lb rise may well underestimate what he had in the tank.

All the rage in the betting for both starts this term; the line came a touch too soon for his strong finish at Newbury (1m2f) on handicap/seasonal debut, while trying to come from further off the pace did not work out at Ascot on the step up to 1m4f but he did muster some late headway (despite hanging right); that sees him upped further in trip today with first-time headgear; it will be interesting to see whether his backers dare go in again.

All the rage in the betting but found the line coming just too soon for his strong finish when second (Bulletin close up in third) of 14 to Rathgar (won again since) on 1m2f Newbury handicap debut and reappearance three weeks ago; that first experience of a big-field handicap should aid his development and he left the strong impression 1m4f will suit; leading claims with further improvement highly.

Form & Verdict
Seen mostly at up to 1m4f, over which he delivered a telling late challenge on the other Newmarket track in May; while that looked encouraging for longer trips, his one attempt at 1m6f (on soft last July) and two at 2m (last two Northumberland Plates) saw him well beaten; that's not conclusive proof that he won't stay 1m6f but it leaves his stamina unproven.

Three wins at this track but he came 13th in this race last year; that was his only appearance over this long a trip and he was also below form when he had a crack at 1m6f, so he's unproven beyond 1m4f, over which he's contested his last nine starts; stamina is the big doubt.

Second run after wind surgery saw him better than ever back on turf for a clearcut win in 12-runner race on the other Newmarket track (1m6f, good to firm) when last seen nearly ten weeks ago; 7lb rise demands better still but he's a regular Flat winner who needs respect.

All of his Flat success for this yard has been on AW, albeit with good-ground hurdle wins too and he was runner-up at Goodwood (1m6f, good to firm) last August; has a run under his belt this term but to win this would require a new best performance on turf.

Won three of his five handicaps, including warm events on good to firm at Ascot (1m4f) and Carlisle (1m3f) in his two starts this season; firmly in charge on first occasion and absolutely hacked up when 5-6 favourite in the latter 16 days ago; shoulders a 6lb penalty today, whereas his mark for future engagements is 11lb higher still; that suggests he wins today if he stays this new trip, and the dam being sister to a 1m5f-2m winner gives plenty of encouragement; deservedly a hot favourite.

Fairly unexposed sort who showed his best form when taking 14-runner Ascot handicap (1m4f, good to firm) seven weeks ago; that race has worked out well, with the third and fourth winning big handicaps at Royal Ascot and at Epsom on Derby day respectively, so a 5lb rise now looks on the lenient side; form of his close second on final start of last year was also boosted at last week's royal meeting and he's a key contender.

Winning handicap debut at Kempton (1m4f, AW) last August; didn't fire in the same way back at Kempton (1m3f) next time but resumed his progression in no uncertain terms when close second in valuable 3yo handicap at Newmarket (1m4f, good) on final start, form which was strongly boosted last weekend by the winner (Yabher) and third (Daiquiri Bay); could have a big say if the betting suggests he's ready to roll after 211 days off.

Second in this race in 2024 and won it last year (good to firm); now he has a 4lb lower mark than last year; that's having failed to finish in the first six in any of his seven races since, but at least his latest start was better than reappearance and it's not unheard of for runners from this stable to surge back to form.

Verdict

It will be very hard to beat WINE DARK SEA if he's in the form he was at Carlisle 16 days ago. The biggest question he faces is regarding stamina, as he's never raced beyond 1m4f, but his dam is sister to a pretty useful 1m5f-2m winner and half-sister to others who stayed well. While cases can be made for others, including three of last year's principals, who were headed then by Oneforthegutter, easily the greatest dangers on 2026 turf evidence are Valedictory and Goblet Of Fire, who are preferred in that order.[Richard Austen]
