Reappeared with creditable third of seven in 1m1f Listed race at Newmarket; short of room at a crucial stage in the London Gold Cup at Newbury (1m2f, good; 16-1) and basically given an easy time from over 1f out, so he's a good deal better than last of ten in that hot contest suggests; however, after 11 races, he is more exposed than most of today's rivals.

Form & Verdict
Close second here one year ago; bossed a five-runner handicap at Newmarket (1m2f) impressively this May; doing the same wasn't possible at Royal Ascot, where he wasn't at all discredited in seventh, but he was able to dictate at Newmarket three weeks ago, so what he produced to take 5l fifth of six that day wouldn't cut the mustard in today's race.

Improved form in 1m2f handicaps at the other Newmarket course on his first two starts this term, bossing a five-runner race (good to firm) impressively on second occasion; doing the same off this 8lb higher mark in 16-runner race at Royal Ascot (1m2f, good to firm; 12-1) wasn't possible but he led entering straight until over 1f out and wasn't at all discredited in seventh (Princling fifth); could get run of the race this time and is one to consider.

Won a maiden at Southwell (1m, AW) in May and pulverised the opposition in a novice at Doncaster (1m2f, good to firm) in June; 17-2 for handicap debut at Royal Ascot (1m2f, good to firm) where he raced freely off the pace and was a never-dangerous eighth, tending to hang up the straight, but that was his best form (beaten about only 4l) and he may be more street-wise this time.

Perhaps unsuited by soft ground and/or front-running on second start, as he's otherwise improved his rating every time; tongue tied for minor honours in two median auction races (1m and 10.5f) this term and, despite his pedigree, 1m4f for handicap debut looks interesting on the latest evidence.

Verdict

The most striking candidate is CIARRAI ABU whose three races this season, two of them wins and two at this track, all suggested serious potential. He saw out 1m really well in those and there's enough stamina in the pedigree to give plenty of hope for 1m2f. While this is a fascinating field almost from top to bottom and the selection is far from alone in being unexposed at this trip, it's the Newmarket 1m2f runner-up Decade Of Time who is feared most, ahead of the impressive Lingfield 1m1f winner Savvy Disko.[Richard Austen]
