Made most to win this race (good to firm) 12 months ago and bounced back to form to beat seven rivals in Listed race at Carlisle six weeks ago; penalised this time but should give it another good go from the front.

Close third in Group 2 Temple Stakes at Haydock 12 months ago and made most to win Listed race at York (5f, good to firm) last summer; well below par all four starts since (short of room in Newmarket Group 3 on latest) but down in grade here and may well bounce back.

Form & Verdict
Last summer's Nunthorpe second was a clear personal best; this season has been a struggle, including in this season's Nunthorpe nine days ago (first run after a gelding operation); not sure he wants the ground too testing and others look stronger.

Rose far above his previous form when second of 17 to Asfoora in this race (100-1) last year in first-time cheekpieces but their effect was fleeting and subsequent runs, including in a handicap, don't offer much hope today; has now been gelded.

Won the Listed Windsor Castle at this meeting as a 2yo; some ups and downs since, with his second to Asfoora in the Group 1 Nunthorpe at York (good to firm; first-time cheekpieces) last August showing what can be done on a good day; however, he needs to rise far above two heavy defeats this year.

Form & Verdict
Group 3 win on soft ground in Germany in 2024; chequered history since but the drop to 5f and fitting of a tongue-tie sparked a transformation at Newcastle in June, winning the Gosforth Park Cup in game fashion; not certain to be in the same form again but he won't be far away if he is.

Finished down the field on stable/seasonal debut at Chester (7.5f) this month but that doesn't tell the full story as he ran well for a long way from his wide draw and was hampered late on; he's dropped to an attractive mark and is just the type his new trainer does very well with.

Well into the veteran stage but he retains a chunk of ability and considerable enthusiasm, winning for the fourth time this year when beating six rivals at Pontefract (5f, good to firm) last month; runner-up back at Pontefract two weeks ago; this might prove too demanding though.

Handles most ground; best form when winning a Group 2 on good to soft at Glorious Goodwood in 2025 and although he hasn't nailed it in the same way this year, the recent rain could give him a toehold into this race; visored once as a 2yo, now goes in blinkers.

Won a handicap at this meeting in 2023 and he won this race last year (good to soft; seems versatile ground-wise); he hasn't been at the very top of his game this year but there have been encouraging signs on his last two starts and he could play a leading role back at Glorious Goodwood.

Five wins and a second from nine attempts over C&D; ended 2025 in flying form and returned off a brutal mark as a consequence; handicapper relenting now and her third at Nottingham 13 days ago was a step back in the right direction; this should be run to suit and she's a strong contender.

Found a Group 3 too much at York last month but she was a very close third when back in a handicap at Hamilton (5f, good) a fortnight ago; she was denied a clear run last time and this progressive 4yo could be firmly in the mix up 2lb.

Largely progressive form; ran a cracker on what was effectively her seasonal return (unseated her rider soon after start on reappearance) when fourth of 15 in 5f Ayr Listed race (soft) in June; travelled strongly close to the pace in 6f York Group 3 (good to firm) since and the return to 5f could suit back in handicap company; part of a strong hand for Ed Bethell.

Verdict

It is easy to argue the cases for Jm Jungle (second choice) and Shagraan at this level despite their wide draws. Fluorescence is on the up and should go well too but but it might be worth taking a chance on AL SHABAB STORM. Consistency has been an issue and Conor Whiteley is unable to claim his allowance so there are negatives but his Gosforth Park Cup win is high-class handicap form and he remains unexposed at both 5f and in a tongue-tie. Throw in the fact he handles soft ground well and he is an interesting contender.[Paul Smith]
