Finished third in the 2020 Gold Cup and won a 2m5f Grade 2 early last season; absolutely nothing to shout about in the meantime and far from convincing despite this drop in grade.

One-time high-class chaser who has proved far from consistent since finishing third in the 2020 Gold Cup; staged a part-revival with Grade 2 win (2m5f) last term but subsequent form leaves a lot to be desired; never figured in major 3m2f handicap at Newbury most recently.

Form & Verdict
Absent since April 2021 and this 12yo needs to prove how much ability he retains; however, he's been given a chance by the handicapper and had a good record at this course for Caroline Bailey, including a close second in this race in 2020; handles good and soft ground; not ruled out on stable debut.

Won twice over hurdles in February (2m7f, soft/heavy); he's better in that discipline but has a lower chase mark and ran well over fences when third on his reappearance at Perth (3m, good) last month; might not be far away.

Inconsistent and tailed off/pulled up on four of his last six starts, including at Aintree in May last time; however, he has an excellent record when fresh at this time of year and won this last season off 2lb lower (good to soft; also effective on good/soft); firmly in calculations.

Returning from a similar absence (and wind surgery) when dominant from the front over C&D (soft) 14 months ago when only 2lb lower, after which he finished second in the final of this race at Sandown; fortunes went into reverse soon after but he's back from further wind surgery and handicapped to run a blinder if again on good terms with himself.

Back to the mark of his near-3m4f Stratford handicap chase win of May 2022; below par last autumn (markedly so latest), but proven defier of absences of over 100 days and a sound surface would be appreciated.

Not seen since three below-par runs in the autumn but has often gone well when fresh before and is now back on same mark as when gaining clearcut win at Stratford (3m3f, good) at start of this season; will be suited by today's drying ground; worth a second look.

This race was one of two wins in military races here last season, both of them under Charlie O'Shea; disappointed last time but was also pulled up prior to his success 12 months ago, and provided he takes to blinkers (replacing usual cheekpieces) he should threaten once more.

Returned from break with a fair third in this race last year (good to soft) and bolted up at Exeter (3m6f, good to soft) next time; his season ended on a low note in March but he's had a wind op since and returns with his yard going well (he's one of two for stable); might not want soft/heavy.

Made it 2-2 over C&D when emerging from off the pace to win ridden out last month; for one who struggles with his consistency, it was encouraging that he posted the same RPR when third to a progressive winner at Wetherby (3m7f); back here he has to be of strong interest.

Verdict

He may not be the force of old but LOSTINTRANSLATION (nap) showed sparkle for a long way in the Grand National in April and can capitalise on a reduced mark on this first run in a veterans’ chase. Wandrin Star won this last year and could be the standout danger, given his excellent record when fresh in autumn. Ramses De Teillee could go well on his first start since wind surgery.[Ben Hutton]
