Form & Verdict
In and out of late and a disappointing favourite at Newmarket last time, but he made all in good style over C&D (good to firm) in May and was a fine third of 29 in the Britannia at Royal Ascot; has won on good to soft; major player if bouncing back to his best for a stable that has won four of the last eight runnings of this contest.

Already a three-time scorer (around 1m) in 2025 and he comes here on the back of a very good second of 13 in 1m Newcastle handicap; must enter calculations off an unchanged mark.

Career win number eight when prevailing narrowly in a Class 4 at Beverley (extended 1m) and tends to find Class 2s too tough these days, so excused his Doncaster run; only 1-17 on the AW but could be a factor.

Form & Verdict
Off the mark in Newbury novice (7f, good) in May and improved again when fourth of 29 in the Britannia at Royal Ascot (66-1); plausible claims on those efforts but unraced on slower than good and withdrawn when the ground turned heavy here earlier this week.

Form & Verdict
Prominent racer who has notched personal bests on his last two outings, making all by 4l at Haydock (7f, good to firm) and a fine second off a 9lb higher mark over the same C&D four weeks later; may not have reached his ceiling just yet but testing conditions would be a concern (unplaced both runs on softer than good).

Gelded prior to reappearance win at Newbury (7f, soft) in April; hasn't repeated the form, racing freely and finding little at Sandown on latest start four weeks ago; now only 1lb higher than for the win and this week's rain is in his favour, but consistency is hardly his strong suit.

Form & Verdict
Bred to be useful and he confirmed the promise of his first two starts when winning Kempton novice (AW) in June, seeming suited by the drop from 1m to 7f; only fourth of eighth when joint-favourite for Sandown handicap next time, possibly doing too much in front; may still be unexposed and a leading contender if handling these conditions (unraced on softer than good).

Verdict

It’s hard to make a watertight case for any of these but the one with the most potential could be NEW BUSINESS who had a possible excuse when only fourth at Sandown last month. His main danger may be Urban Sprawl, from a yard with an excellent record in this race. Tuesday’s runner-up Sophia’s Starlight and the progressive Chartwell House complete the shortlist.[Richard O’Brien]
