Form & Verdict
Below par more often than not over the last two seasons and soundly beaten at Ascot four weeks ago; however, he won the County Hurdle at Cheltenham (2m1f, soft) last March and popped up with another big run when second at Ascot (1m7f, good) two starts ago; in the mix if on a going day.

Has lots of form in major handicaps, generally at about 2m, but losing spell goes back three years and he looks unlikely to land this hot contest at the age of 11; remote third at Newbury most recently.

Missed last term; useful on his day (County winner) but is into the veteran stage and not particularly solid on this season's form, for all that he was placed in the Greatwood; beaten twice in this contest (pulled up in 2023, fifth in 2024).

Form & Verdict
Pulled up on chase and seasonal debut at Wetherby in November but he was in touch when making a bad mistake five out and has had wind surgery since; won two handicap hurdles last season (2m3f, soft/good to soft; including here) and could have a part to play now back in this sphere.

Twice finished runner-up at Kelso in the first half of this year (2m, soft/good to soft) and he returned from a break with an encouraging fourth at Bangor (2m3f, good to soft) last month; shaped as though he may improve for that latest run and he represents last year's winning yard; contender.

Has pretty good 5-13 hurdling strike-rate that includes two course wins (2m/2m3f); not seen since his keeping-on second at Kelso (2m, good to soft) in first-time blinkers in May but remains on the same, workable mark; usual cheekpieces back on today.

Form & Verdict
Ex-French 5yo who won on his British debut in a maiden hurdle at Lingfield (2m3f, good to soft) in November, before a good second at Sandown (2m, heavy) on handicap debut; disappointing at Aintree (2m4f, soft) on Boxing Day but retains potential and is not written off now back down in trip.

Below best on his four outings in 2025 and unseated at the first fence at Taunton recently; also needs to prove his stamina; however, this 7yo has plenty of time to get his career back on track and is on a handy mark on his 2024 exploits; perhaps the new cheekpieces will give him a boost.

Soundly beaten twice in a row at the end of 2022 (chase debut on second occasion) and this is her first run since; however, the handicapper has given her a chance and she goes well fresh; not discounted on return.

Scored off this mark over fences at Ludlow (3m, good) in October and ran quite well when fourth in 2m5f hurdle there (good to soft) in February, but the addition of cheekpieces did not appear to help much two starts ago and she was again below par (without headgear) last month.

Form & Verdict
Absent since September 2021, when showing useful Flat form for the now-retired Keith Dalgleish; unruly at post and withdrawn at Warwick last Saturday (22-1 at the time); however, his new trainer brought Mint Gold back from a similar layoff to win in November, and this fellow showed considerable promise on both hurdle starts in 2020-21; not ruled out in first-time blinkers.

Smart on the Flat in his heyday and won a novice hurdle in 2020 but, following a mammoth absence, looked reluctant to race and never really got involved when 50-1 for last month's stable/handicap hurdle debut (first-time blinkers); current ability very hard to gauge.

Running well at a useful level on the Flat for Keith Dalgleish when last raced in September 2021; had earlier run twice over hurdles, winning a Carlisle novice before a respectable effort raised in class here; comes with risks after so long out (22-1 when unruly at the post for an intended start at Warwick last month) but he's in good hands and couldn't be ruled out; tries blinkers (has run well in a visor).

Form & Verdict
Somewhat underwhelming at Cheltenham last month but prior to that this lightly raced 5yo was an encouraging fourth there (2m, good to soft) on his handicap debut, and he's a player if tapping back into that promise.

Pretty consistent over fences and hurdles on good/good to soft ground this season and has slipped to a good mark; campaigned mainly at around 2m but has won over an extended 2m3f; probably won't be far away.

Fair efforts in the autumn across first three chase starts, finishing second last time (2m, good) despite not jumping well; on a handy mark on last season's best hurdle form; could be a contender now back in this sphere.

Verdict

Two of these are returning from absences and none of the other four ran well last time out, so it’s a tricky puzzle. JUNGLE JACK has had wind surgery since being pulled up on his chase debut and he won over hurdles here last season. He earns the vote ahead of Mr Mackay, who was a good fourth at Cheltenham two starts ago, while it will be no surprise if Faivoir and Bucksy Des Epeires are involved.[Ben Hutton]
