Below par in 1m2f Listed race at Royal Ascot last time and his best form has come over shorter than this; however, he kept on okay on his first encounter with 1m4f in at Group 2 at Newmarket in May and he's just 2lb higher than when winning the 1m1f Cambridgeshire last September; not ruled out.

Top handicap form when nosed out in the John Smith's Cup over C&D and again when scoring at the Ebor meeting and picking up the Cambridgeshire in 2023; 0-7 since and he beat one home on his return from a hefty absence/wind surgery at Newmarket in May; should build on that comeback but may need another run or two before becoming of interest.

Excelled in top handicaps at York and Newmarket in 2023, including with a C&D win in the Cambridgeshire (good to firm; 3lb lower today); however, he only once threatened to hit those heights in 2024 and, after wind surgery, missed all of 2025; that leaves him with a 658-day absence to overcome but his handicap mark has been slashed.

Commanding winner of competitive Epsom handicap (1m4f, good to soft) last month and the leaders didn't come back to him when third of five in York Listed race (1m6f, good to soft) last time; this should be run to suit and he's respected off a mark 7lb higher than at Epsom.

Won handicap at Epsom (good to soft) on Derby day and good second from the front in Group 3 at Goodwood (good to firm) three weeks ago, both 1m4f; third in 1m6f Listed race at York in between might suggest limitations for today's task but trying to come from off a steady pace will have counted against him, so he's not fully exposed.

Better than ever when readily winning competitive handicap at Epsom (1m4f, good to soft) on Derby day; not seen to best effect in steadily run Listed race at York last time and could have the same problem today, while there's a question as to whether he's fully effective on fast ground; however, this progressive 4yo could yet have more to offer and is not ruled out.

Sights have been lowered to handicaps this season, without making a serious impact but she was not far away on three of her last four starts, including at York Ebor festival last time; not proven over this far (tailed off over 1m5f here on penultimate start) but she is down the weights.

Has dropped down the weights and is 5lb lower than when a fair sixth at Epsom (1m2f, good to soft) two starts ago; however, she's won just one of her 14 starts and the forecast fast ground is a concern.

Form & Verdict
Reserve; won at Southwell (1m4f, AW) last December and returned from a break with fair fifth at York (1m4f, good) in May; however, he's never won off a mark this high and looks vulnerable in what is a hot race.

Second in this race in 2024 and won it last year (good to firm); now he has a 4lb lower mark than last year; that's having failed to finish in the first six in any of his seven races since, but at least his latest start was better than reappearance and it's not unheard of for runners from this stable to surge back to form.

His form went the wrong way last season and he was soundly beaten on last month's return at Newmarket; however, he may have needed that run and is 2lb lower than when winning at Newmarket (1m6f, good to firm) last July; versatile ground-wise; not ruled out.

Form & Verdict
Reserve; disappointing at Pontefract a fortnight ago but prior to that he'd run well to finish placed at Doncaster (1m4f, good to soft) and over C&D (good), when unlucky in running each time, and he's not discounted.

Ran as if something was amiss last time; in good form otherwise this term and looks capable of being involved; however, he's still seeking a first handicap success away from Ripon.

Loves Ripon where he won again last month by a narrow margin; badly in under a penalty when a close third over 1m6f here 12 days ago and he's 2lb lower for this; can be relied upon to give his running and be seriously involved.

Verdict

David O’Meara has won two of the last eight runnings and has another likely type in EPIC POET (nap), who was runner-up at Royal Ascot on his second start for the yard and remains well treated on his old French form. Relentless Voyager bolted up at Epsom in June on his last handicap outing and may be the chief threat ahead of the lightly raced 5yo La Yakel, who makes his reappearance. The veteran Euchen Glen arrives on the back of a win, while the first-time blinkers could be a plus for the well-bred Maghlaak.[Ben Hutton]
