Form & Verdict
Consistency not his strong suit, but he won twice here (1m2f/1m4f) last winter and added another win at Hamilton (1m4f, good to soft) in September; reportedly had an irregular heartbeat when running poorly at Southwell last month; capable on a going day but comes with risks attached.

Fair on the Flat in his prime but has a lowly mark in that sphere nowadays; ran well to a point on last month's hurdling debut at Uttoxeter (2m, heavy) and might last longer on today's faster ground but others appeal more all the same.

Won a Polytrack bumper at Lingfield in November 2020 and twice placed here (1m2f/1m4f) at the end of last year; showed little in first four starts after returning in September from 255 days off, but with a tongue-tie added he performed much better when second of 13 at Southwell (1m4f, Tapeta; well backed) on Friday; cheekpieces are now tried; claims if reproducing latest run.

Sole win in AW bumper in late 2020 but he went close off a reduced mark here recently (1m4f; first-time tongue-tie) when the subject of a major gamble; key player if he can back that up on the step up to 2m; cheekpieces on.

Made the frame four consecutive times last July-September (1m3f-2m), but made a low-key reappearance last week and is probably better suited by a stiffer test of stamina than this now.

Verdict

C&D winners Selecto and Vertice have something to prove although they are capable of making an impact on their best form. However, it may be worth taking a chance with SHEHARZ who showed much more when third in first-time cheekpieces at Wolverhampton on Monday and remains unexposed after six starts. The main danger may be Selfish Brian whose last two outings have suggested this in-between trip could prove ideal. Strong Team and Raiff are others to consider.[David Bellingham]
