Flat-bred 6yo who went close in what has turned out to be a fairly good race at Market Rasen (soft) in December 2020; not seen again since, though.

From good jumping family that includes Grade 2 chase winner Silver Hallmark and Listed hurdle winner Gayebury; just a respectable third on debut at Newton Abbot (good) in October but still features prominently in calculations here.

Did not live up to favouritism in a bumper at Newton Abbot (2m1f, good) in October but his fourth of 13 at Huntingdon (2m, good to soft; 15-2) five weeks ago was better form; limitations but has shown enough to suggest he's a player on hurdle debut today and he is well related.

Out of a bumper winner and made very promising debut when clear second to stablemate of Mullins Bay at Chepstow (good to soft) last month; will be a tough nut to crack if that form can be transferred to Polytrack.

Acts on any ground; had very little to spare at Sandown (2m4f) most recently but the runner-up has franked the form since; still competitively treated back up 2lb, assuming he takes to first-time headgear.

Displayed improvement when runner-up at Tramore (good) in August, his fourth start; made underwhelming stable debut when well-held fourth at Hereford (soft) last month but may be seen to better effect now back on a less testing surface.

Fortuitous winner of the 2025 Champion Hurdle (same story in this season's Fighting Fifth); could only manage fifth when attempting to retain her crown (9.75l behind Lossiemouth); posted another solid effort in the Aintree Hurdle last time when fourth (2m4f, good to soft); return to 2m should suit, cheekpieces go on and she was second in this contest last year (good) but may need further luck to increase Grade 1 haul.

Record of 3-4 at Cheltenham features two Festival wins, beating Brighterdaysahead in the Grade 2 novice hurdle in 2024 then admittedly fortuitous (left in lead when State Man took a late fall; odds-on Constitution Hill exited earlier) when 25-1 in this race last year; also had fortune on her side in this season's Fighting Fifth as the front two in the market, including The New Lion, failed to complete; ran creditably on Boxing Day when last seen; largely consistent and should go well but may require further luck to retain her crown.

Verdict

All four with experience have shown significant ability but the most compelling option is RANGE, who ran a big race in defeat on last month’s debut at Chepstow. Mullins Bay was safely held when third on his debut at Newton Abbot but has a good pedigree and is with a top stable, so it won’t be a big surprise if he makes the necessary progress here. Kankin has been off the track for over two years since his promising debut but also warrants consideration.[Chris Wilson]
