2m4f hurdle/triple chase winner (he's well handicapped on that) at up to 3m1f when trained in Ireland; form tailed off dramatically last season; changed hands for £5,000 in September and looks best watched.

Came up short in a better race over 3m4f at Haydock last time and now drops back in trip/grade; defied a 1lb higher mark at Carlisle (soft) last season and has possibilities if back to that form.

Won a hurdle race on heavy; scored at Carlisle (3m2f, soft) in October 2021 but pulled up in the Welsh National next time on his only attempt beyond that; back-to-form fourth to Morning Spirit at Carlisle (favourite) on reappearance but to win this probably requires a career best.

Stopped quite quickly on his last two runs but he ran well in some warm handicaps last winter before picking up a small-field 3m3f chase here in January; on a good mark and he can go well fresh; interesting.

Has won twice over fences and nearly made that three when edged out at Newbury (2m6f, good to soft) on his final run of last season; his remote third in a novice hurdle first time back is forgiven but he then pulled up back over fences at Bangor when heavy ground was no excuse; now goes in cheekpieces; others preferred.

Picked up for £5,200 in May and got most of it back when landing a 3m2f handicap chase at Newton Abbot (good; made all in four-runner race) in October; disappointing at Taunton next time and now reverts to hurdling for first time since March 2021; 3lb out of the handicap.

Picked up by new connections for £5,200 in May and got most of it back with when landing a 3m2f Newton Abbot handicap chase (good) last month; it was only a four-runner race but the second filled the same position in a stronger contest at Uttoxeter since.

Verdict

Three against the field are JAYTEE, Small Present and Old Painless, who are preferred in that order. There was a lot to like about Small Present’s performance here in the Lincolnshire National on Boxing Day, while Old Painless looked like making it 2-2 over fences for such a long way at Kelso last time, but the return to fences can result in Jaytee resuming the progress he made last season.[Richard Austen]
