Form & Verdict
2-4 on turf, the latter win gained in York Listed race (6f, good to soft) in October; behind Shouldvebeenaring and only third when odds-on for AW debut at Newcastle (6f) in October but will be tough to beat on these terms if able to replicate his best turf form here; cheekpieces removed; tongue-tie added.

Has done well for this yard, in handicaps from 6f to 1m; he wasn't beaten far in a big field at York two runs ago after hitting some traffic and the winner (favourite) got first run on him when closing fast in a recent claimer at Chester (front two dominated); good chance off this mark back in a handicap, especially with Conor Whiteley taking off 5lb.

Consistent since leaving Willie Mullins, performing well in handicaps from 6f to 1m; York last time wasn't necessarily a backward step as he wasn't beaten all that far in a big field after finding trouble in running; solid chance now into a claimer; first run here.

Form & Verdict
Triple turf winner last year, most recently in Ripon Listed race (6f, good) in August; probably not in peak form when second on AW debut at Newcastle (6f) in October but still finished ahead of Alpha Capture there; major player.

Has won just one of his last 17 races and was tailed off in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes at Newmarket last week; would be a shock winner.

Has blown hot and cold this season, best efforts when beaten a nose in Group 2 Duke of York (6f, good) in May and when winning Group 3 at Deauville (6f, good to soft) in July; faced stiff task but well held even so in Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock last week; has a chance if on a going day.

Form & Verdict
Came good for Michael Appleby with two 5f Class 4 nursery wins towards end of 2022 (Tapeta/Polytrack); tackles stronger opposition here and is not sure to be suited by the return to 6f but has nothing to prove on the surface and may gain a tactical advantage if able to get the early lead.

Always tended to be hot and cold in the past, so disappointing he didn't fare better at Lingfield (AW) latest given a decent record there; not a lot of wiggle room off this mark and is now tried in first-time cheekpieces (wore blinkers twice as a 2yo).

Two wins and a close second to his name in four runs over C&D; tended to be hot and cold in the past, twice winning back-to-back, which bodes well after bouncing back off 4lb lower at Yarmouth last time; goes well for Luke Morris too.

Form & Verdict
Won twice over 5f last year and was evidently well suited by the step up to 6f when comfortably taking Class 4 Southwell handicap last month; again ran very well when second at Lingfield (6f) on Saturday but has a bit to find on the figures here.

Rocking Ends

J: Cieren Fallon

T: Tom Clover

With this visor back on he won at Newmarket (5f, good to firm) last month, landing that handicap for the third year in succession; not beaten far when fifth of 13 at Ascot (5f, good to firm) since but he's never won off a mark this high and there's a suspicion he'll again be vulnerable.

11/2

Verdict

Alpha Capture and Shouldvebeenaring (preferred in that order) won at Listed level on turf last summer but both were below their best in the same Newcastle conditions race on their AW debuts in October and neither has raced again since. Preference is for MICHAELA’S BOY, who may face some competition for the early lead from Rocking Ends but ended 2022 in excellent form and could be hard to catch if able to dominate here.[Chris Wilson]
