Form & Verdict
2-4 on turf, the latter win gained in York Listed race (6f, good to soft) in October; behind Shouldvebeenaring and only third when odds-on for AW debut at Newcastle (6f) in October but will be tough to beat on these terms if able to replicate his best turf form here; cheekpieces removed; tongue-tie added.

Formerly with William Haggas and Willie Mullins; consistent for this yard and deserved his battling win over C&D latest; can run well again off just 3lb higher.

Not the force of old but he retains ability and has performed with credit for his new yard this year, most recently finishing second of nine at Pontefract 12 days ago (6f, good); down in class today and should go well despite his small rise in the weights.

Form for new yard this term comprises two placed efforts over 1m and a running-on sixth over 7f; useful over 6f early in career but isn't crying out for the return to this trip.

Form & Verdict
Triple turf winner last year, most recently in Ripon Listed race (6f, good) in August; probably not in peak form when second on AW debut at Newcastle (6f) in October but still finished ahead of Alpha Capture there; major player.

Has blown hot and cold this season, best efforts when beaten a nose in Group 2 Duke of York (6f, good) in May and when winning Group 3 at Deauville (6f, good to soft) in July; faced stiff task but well held even so in Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock last week; has a chance if on a going day.

Form & Verdict
Came good for Michael Appleby with two 5f Class 4 nursery wins towards end of 2022 (Tapeta/Polytrack); tackles stronger opposition here and is not sure to be suited by the return to 6f but has nothing to prove on the surface and may gain a tactical advantage if able to get the early lead.

Two wins and a close second to his name in four runs over C&D; tended to be hot and cold in the past, twice winning back-to-back, which bodes well after bouncing back off 4lb lower at Yarmouth last time; goes well for Luke Morris too.

AW win in January and went close 19 days later; unplaced in both turf starts this spring and he needs to raise his game.

Prominent racer; won at Lingfield (5f, AW) in January on second start since returning to this stable and he went close over that same C&D next time; ran creditably back on turf at Nottingham (5f, good) 17 days ago but he has a better strike-rate on the AW (1-24 on turf).

Form & Verdict
Won twice over 5f last year and was evidently well suited by the step up to 6f when comfortably taking Class 4 Southwell handicap last month; again ran very well when second at Lingfield (6f) on Saturday but has a bit to find on the figures here.

He's on a hat-trick in this race and followed last year's win by also scoring at Windsor and Yarmouth (all 5f on good to firm in cheekpieces) in August; no wins since but he didn't get much cover when midfield over C&D one week ago and his race record means he can't be discounted; also ran well sole previous go in a visor.

C&D record reads 131, the defeat coming behind Emperor Spirit in this race last year; 5lb lower than for his last win and although he's yet to really shine this year, the booking of Oisin Murphy is notable; contender with frequent cheekpieces now discarded.

C&D win last August came off a 3lb higher mark; encouraging reappearance here five weeks ago and today's ground will be more suitable; solid claims dropped into a Class 4.

Verdict

Alpha Capture and Shouldvebeenaring (preferred in that order) won at Listed level on turf last summer but both were below their best in the same Newcastle conditions race on their AW debuts in October and neither has raced again since. Preference is for MICHAELA’S BOY, who may face some competition for the early lead from Rocking Ends but ended 2022 in excellent form and could be hard to catch if able to dominate here.[Chris Wilson]
