Form & Verdict
Inconsistent and showed disappointingly little on reappearance but he made his name as a mudlark and this is a less competitive race than those he usually contests; blinkers (worn on final start last term, ran well before falling two out) return; not the greatest shock were he to spring back to life.

The oldest of these veterans, being a 14yo, and bare form this term leaves a question mark over whether he retains the useful ability that has been present for a long time; however, won this race off 2lb higher last year (soft) and has a good chance if back on song.

Form & Verdict
Lightly raced for a 10yo; 3m5f winner on heavy ground in January 2022 and second in the 4m1f Eider at Newcastle on good to soft last term; wore cheekpieces on last three starts; had wind surgery since latest; while longer trips would appear to be his thing, this should still be a right slog; bit to prove first time out but he needs a close look.

Form & Verdict
Well down the weights before winning veterans' races at Chepstow (2m7f) and Sandown (3m); they were on good to soft (acts on soft, did on heavy in 2018 but unraced on it since); back up another 4lb but he remains well handicapped on his form two years ago, in a campaign that saw his mark go 11lb higher than today's; should go well again.

Acts on heavy; strike-rate could be better, having scored just once since 2019, but most of his form over the last two years would see him on the premises.

Usually gives his running but has a poor strike-rate over fences (1-18) and he dropped away to be beaten some 31l last time at Warwick when the subject of strong market support in first-time blinkers; one of the highest rated in here but others appeal more.

Often runs well in defeat but he's now 1-17 over fences, having performed below his best the last twice; connections turn to blinkers (replacing cheekpieces) for some assistance; others are safer.

Form & Verdict
Seven of his nine wins came on good ground but there were two on soft in 2021, including his only start here; no win since July 2022 and although he's recorded four minor honours from his seven races this June-November, his recent efforts don't look good enough to see off today's rivals.

Seemingly on the downgrade now but enjoyed the chance to dominate small field from the front at Market Rasen (2m5f, good) a fortnight ago; contests a much deeper race here but recent 4lb rise ought to be manageable and he's evidently in good heart.

Veteran who remains very capable on his day, with a first and close second this season; below best last time but could bounce back from that.

Verdict

While Good Boy Bobby has been resurgent and could still have plenty of mileage in his handicap mark, a chance is taken that THE GALLOPING BEAR can return in winning form after wind surgery, with heavy ground and therefore a serious stamina test likely to see him in a positive light if he is on song. Up Helly Aa King is third on the list but Sam Brown is still not passed over lightly.[Richard Austen]
