Promising over hurdles last season and he's well handicapped on his chase form from the end of last year; however, he's finished down the field over fences/hurdles on his last two starts; blinkers replace cheekpieces.

Dual 2m hurdle winner (once here) last season who showed considerable promise over fences towards end of last year; suffered a fall and a heavy defeat last month but now reverts to hurdling on a tempting mark; completely unexposed over this sort of trip under rules; interesting.

Fairly useful bumper/hurdles scorer who shaped well on his chasing debut when third in 2m Aintree handicap in October; has failed to build on it though in three subsequent outings, falling at the ninth fence at Doncaster (2m4f) nine days ago; has something to prove now.

Completed hurdle double when winning here (2m6f, soft) in December and tapped back into that promise when runner-up at Sandown (2m4f, soft) a fortnight ago on his third run over fences; won on good to soft going over hurdles; that latest form reads well and he's high on the list this afternoon.

Highly progressive over hurdles in 2025, winning four times (2m4f-2m7f, good to soft/soft), but he's performed below that level switched to fences in recent months; still early days in this sphere but difficult to make a case for him here.

Highly progressive over hurdles last year, winning four times (2m4f-2m7f, good to soft/soft); weakened quickly when soundly beaten sixth on last month's chase debut at Newcastle (2m4f, good to soft) but that's unlikely to be the limit of his ability over fences; no surprise to see a bold show.

Inconsistent this season and down the field at Haydock a fortnight ago; however, he ran pretty well when runner-up at Doncaster two starts ago and is 2lb lower than when a close fourth of 13 in this race last year; if he's on song in a first-time tongue-tie he might not be far away.

Short-headed on his only start here; won a Hexham chase in October; hasn't done as well since, finishing runner-up to Jakar Du Moulin when returned to hurdling at Doncaster (3m) on latest start but he needs to build on that markedly; stable in good form.

Won a Hexham novice handicap chase in October (2m4f); hasn't done as well since but reverts to hurdling off a feasible mark; this good ground suits and stable going well, so an interesting candidate.

8yo who has returned from an absence this season and has improved with each of his three chase starts, winning at Hexham (2m4f, soft) last month; this is a tougher assignment but he did it readily last time and the step up in trip could be a positive move; he's one to consider.

Far from disgraced when last of five on last month's chase debut here (2m, heavy), when 33-1 and very much up against it at the weights on his first outing since October 2024; this 3m point winner showed promise in novice hurdles at up to 2m7f; interesting now back up in trip on handicap debut.

Placed twice in a row in December (2m4f/2m3f, soft/good to soft) and had an excuse (hampered) at Newcastle in January; heavy ground may have been against him here last time and he's not discounted now in cheekpieces.

Somewhat similar to Zero Tolerance, being an exposed sort whose chase record is 0-8; the difference is that he's a five-time hurdles winner, most recently off 5lb higher at Wetherby (2m3f) in October; recent form suggests this drop in trip is worth exploring; interesting back here.

Failed to win over hurdles (0-7), going closest when runner-up in a Hexham maiden (2m4f) 13 months ago; respectable on recent chase debut at Wetherby (3m; fourth of nine); 2lb lower, and back in trip with cheekpieces retained.

Verdict

This looks very open as none of the eight can be dismissed with confidence. The suggestion is JOECOOKER who was progressing well over fences until an excusable failure last time. Gentleman Bill doesn’t have a lot to find with the selection and he was one of the favourites when departing mid-race at Doncaster on Thursday. Big John Wayne faced a tough task on his chase debut and remains unexposed.[Alistair Jones]
