Glorious Goodwood Tips Day 5: Goodwood Tips For the Final Day Including the Stewards Cup

The final day of Glorious Goodwood features the Stewards’ Cup, one of the most prestigious sprint handicaps in the racing calendar. There is always a wide range of Goodwood day 5 tips for this six-furlong cavalry charge on one of the fastest tracks in the country. Punters found it tough going last year, with 22/1 shot Summerghand winning the race, and 66/1 outsider Brian The Snail finishing in the places.

The Stewards Cup has been won by some high-class sprinters including Soba (1982), Lochsong (1992), Danetime (1997) and Borderlescott (2006). There have been five two-time winners of the race, the last of which was Sky Diver (1967, 1968).

13.05 Goodwood Tips: British EBF Maiden Stakes (2yo) 7f

The action gets underway on Glorious Goodwood day 5 with the British EBF Maiden Stakes, which had previously been run later on in the card.

The last two renewals have been won by 9/1 shots, with Titan Rock winning in 2020 and the most recent renewal won by Imperial Fighter, who ran out a comfortable winner for Andrew Balding under a fine ride from Oisin Murphy.

13.40 Goodwood Tips: Stewards’ Sprint Stakes Handicap (3yo+) 6f

Next up is the Stewards’ Sprint Stakes, a consolation race for horses that failed to make the ballot for the featured Stewards’ Cup. Scorching Heat (2017) is the only successful favourite in the last ten years and it might pay to look at some of the bigger odds runners. Last year’s renewal was won by Mr Wagyu at odds of 16/1, with 33/1 runner-up Able Kane chasing him home. The Stewards’ Sprint could provide some clues regarding any draw bias ahead of your Goodwood day 5 tips for the big race at 15.40.

14.10 Goodwood Tips: Summer Handicap (3yo+) 1m6f

Leading course trainer Mark Johnston is the man to follow for your Goodwood day 5 tips in this race. He has won the Summer Handicap four times in the past seven seasons, including the 2020 and 2019 renewals. However, he failed to land the spoils last year as Prince Alex (13/2) won in his first race since transferring to trainer Michael Bell’s yard.

In 2019, King’s Advice became only the second winning favourite during the past ten years in a race where it pays to stick with horses with winning form over a mile and a half or beyond.

14.45 Goodwood Tips: Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (3yo+) (Group 2) 1m6f

Stamina is also the key for your Lillie Langtry Stakes tips, a race confined to fillies and mares. Enbihaar was an impressive winner for John Gosden and Jim Crowley in 2019. She started a co-favourite of three in a race where most winners tend to come from the first three in the Goodwood betting. She then followed up in 2019, joining an elusive club of horses to have won the race more than once, with Tartouche (2005, 2006) and Wild Coco (2012, 2013) the only previous horses to achieve the feat.

Last year’s renewal was won by odds-on favourite Wonderful Tonight (4/5), who won comfortably enough to give trainer David Menusier a first win in the race.

15.20 Goodwood Tips: Stewards’ Cup (3yo+) 6f

Commanche Falls ridden by jockey Connor Beasley wins the Unibet Stewards' Cup (Heritage Handicap) during day five of the Goodwood Festival at Goodwood Racecourse, Chichester.

The Stewards’ Cup is the biggest betting race of the week and can be a very difficult puzzle to solve. Favourites have won three of the last ten renewals yet all of them were improving three-year-olds. The draw can influence the outcome and it may be worth noting that Magical Memory (2015), Dancing Star (2016) and Khaadem (2019) were all drawn low.

However, four of the last five renewals have been won by horses from a double-figure draw, including last year with Commanche Falls. There have also been several shock results here including Lancelot Du Lac (2017) at 25/1 and Gifted Master (2018) at 20/1. Horses that ran disappointingly in the Wokingham Handicap often run here where the sharper track and faster ground can result in a much-improved performance.

15:55 Goodwood Tips: Medallia Handicap Stakes (3yo) 7f

The penultimate race of the 2022 Glorious Goodwood is another race that has been dominated by Mark Johnston in recent years. He’s won three of the last seven renewals, but hasn’t won the race since Vale Of Kent in 2018.

Just three of the last ten renewals have been won by horses at double-figure odds, but that does include last years winner Oo De Lally, who was a 10/1 winner for the 2021 Glorious Goodwood top trainer Andrew Balding.

16.30 Goodwood Tips: Singleton Handicap Stakes (3yo+) 1m1f

Godolphin and Bin Suroor closed out Glorious Goodwood in 2019 with a quick-fire double in the last two races, taking this prize with Gifts Of Gold (Cieren Fallon). He was the first winning favourite in this race since Landaman (2012) won for Mark Johnston, and favourites have since now won each of the last three renewals. Joint-favourites Muraad and Overwrite finished in the first two places – with the former running out a narrow winner, before Rebel Territory ran out a convincing winner in last year’s renewal.

There have also been some shock results in a tricky finale including Illusive (2016) at 28/1 and Storm King (2017) at 25/1.
