Form & Verdict
Improved form in 1m2f handicaps at the other Newmarket course on his first two starts this term, bossing a five-runner race (good to firm) impressively on second occasion; doing the same off this 8lb higher mark in 16-runner race at Royal Ascot (1m2f, good to firm; 12-1) wasn't possible but he led entering straight until over 1f out and wasn't at all discredited in seventh (Princling fifth); could get run of the race this time and is one to consider.

Mixed bag as 2yo but improved form in two 1m2f Newmarket handicaps this term; had it all his own way up front in five-runner race last time (good to firm) but stretched clear impressively from over 1f out; 8lb higher in a much more competitive affair today, but runner-up Sahara King went close in the always-strong London Gold Cup next time; considered.

Pretty useful in two of his five efforts as 2yo; second favourite for handicap/seasonal debut over C&D (good) 18 days ago but weakened in the final 1f into fourth of eight; that was creditable but he needs to build on it.

Form & Verdict
This step up in trip is not sure to suit but he arrived late on the scene to win handicaps at Wolverhampton (8.6f, AW) and Sandown (1m, good) on his first two outings this year and came from last in the Britannia at Royal Ascot (1m, good to firm) three weeks ago, finishing 12th of 30 overall but second of those who had raced far side; probably remains in form.

Won on good to firm here on debut but bypassed the Silver Bowl at Carlisle last month on account of those conditions; he'd probably run well if okay on this surface, having gone 2-2 since being gelded and last time at Sandown (1m, good) looking good value for his narrow defeat of Organise.

Form & Verdict
Improved form over 1m2f at the other Newmarket track on his first two starts this season, winning a handicap (on good) and third of five in a Listed race (good to firm); the Derby Italiano on heavy ground last time did not work out but he returns to a handicap on what looks a pretty good mark.

Ex-Ballydoyle colt who got off the mark in first-time cheekpieces (retained since) on his stable debut in a Wolverhampton novice (9.4f, AW) in December and followed up over this C&D (good) 16 days ago on his first handicap start; could continue to progress but does need another step forward today.

Some improvement in maidens in the mud for Aidan O'Brien in the autumn; 30,000gns purchase and first-time cheekpieces (replacing blinkers) when getting off the mark at first time of asking for new yard in seven-runner novice at Wolverhampton (9.4f, AW) in December, making all; needs a chunk of improvement on this handicap debut but the trip should not be a problem.

Form & Verdict
Shaped well at Newbury on debut before winning an 11-runner novice at Windsor (1m, good to firm; cosily) in May and a three-runner novice at Nottingham (1m, soft) in June; Windsor runner-up Heraldry now has a big pull in the weights but this one is lightly raced and promising, and he shapes as if 1m2f can help on this handicap debut.

Form & Verdict
Sole win was at 1-4 in a novice race but competitive every time, in valuable handicaps over 1m and 1m2f on last two outings (good to firm); latest was at Royal Ascot (10-1) where he had the widest draw and mostly raced widest but kept on in fifth of 16 (Evanesco nearly 2l behind in seventh); that did not look the ideal run of the race and he's probably set for better still.

Reappeared at 1-4 with a ready novice win; 2-1 favourite when good fourth of 14 for the rearranged Silver Bowl at Carlisle (also 1m on good to firm) three weeks ago on handicap debut, making inroads too late but that experience of a hot handicap at right-handed track could stand him in good stead and, in accordance with the dam's side, 1m2f now looks well worth exploring.

Runner-up last October on both 2yo starts (7f, AW/good), on the second occasion in a novice at Newmarket that has worked out very well; reappeared with a ready win at 1-4 in Wetherby novice (1m, good to firm) and there's every chance that this unexposed colt will be better than today's opening mark.

Form & Verdict
Got up close home in a maiden at Kempton (1m, AW) in April on reappearance; a gap opened at the right time that day but it didn't in a novice at Windsor (1m, good to firm) in May and Decade Of Time got first run before this one found room from just inside the final 1f; left the impression of unfinished business that day and now has a 10lb pull with his admittedly promising rival; failed to get into 1m2f Royal Ascot handicap as a reserve; dam was 11.6f Lingfield Oaks Trial winner; major interest.

Reserve; won Kempton maiden (1m, AW) on reappearance and came from off the pace again when second of 11 in novice at Windsor (1m, good to firm); has had just three races and had to bide his time before getting in the clear last time, so he's surely capable of better; dam was a Lingfield Oaks Trial winner, so moving up from 1m should suit; one to note on handicap debut.

Verdict

It's a fascinating field. The small number of runners may well give Evanesco (second choice) the chance to have it all his own way in front, as he did on his penultimate start but certainly didn't at Royal Ascot. In fact it can be argued strongly for all three of those who appeared at the Royal meeting that the run of the race there failed to see them to best effect, and Princling finished two places ahead of Evanesco. Upped in trip, there are also eye-catching handicap newcomers in Decade Of Time, who is clearly a rising force, and HERALDRY, who finished snapping at his heels when the two of them clashed in a Windsor novice in early May. Heraldry is unraced since, whereas Decade Of Time has won again, and one upshot is a big swing in the weights which may well hand the Gosden-trained colt the initiative.[Richard Austen]
