Form & Verdict
Reliable 6yo who was a close second in the Chester Cup (2m2f, good; 3lb higher today) on reappearance under Toby Moore; not so good in the Queen Alexandra at Royal Ascot (2m5f, good to firm) but he did stay on into a fairly remote fourth; strong each-way candidate.

Likeable 6yo who handles any ground and can usually be relied upon to give his running, as was the case when a close second to A Piece Of Heaven in the Chester Cup (2m2f, good); Toby Moore's claim meant the winner was giving him 8lb that day, so he looks to have his work cut out to reverse those placings; can run well but probably not well enough.

Unraced on firmer than good and his form claims are pretty flimsy; however, he's one of the dark horses of the race after just six starts and he's shaped at 1m6f as if he may well be an out-and-out stayer; has tried cheekpieces and a visor once each, and now blinkers are given a go; close relation Middle Earth was third over 2m in last year's Melbourne Cup.

Signed off last term with a win at Haydock (1m6f, good) on the only time he's worn cheekpieces; overcame trouble at Hamilton (1m5f) on reappearance and although it was hard work when he plugged on from the rear to be sixth of 16 at Royal Ascot (1m6f, good to firm; 9-4 favourite) it was his best performance on the figures and gave encouragement for 2m+; cheekpieces return.

Made his debut just over a year ago; firmly on the upgrade when signing off last season with a handicap win at Haydock (1m6f, good; first-time cheekpieces) and following up on his reappearance at Hamilton (1m5f, good; no headgear) where the narrow margin of victory masked his superiority (he overcame trouble); he's up a further 8lb but the improvement could keep coming; James Doyle prefers him over Wathnan's other pair; big player.

Cheekpieces enlisted for last three starts, winning on first occasion and good sixth in the Chester Cup (2m2f, good); 16-1 for Queen Alexandra at Royal Ascot (2m5f) six weeks ago but weakened right out of it in the last half-mile; that was his first race on firmer than good since start of career three years ago, so there's a big question mark about the ground.

Good strike-rate of 7-17 and he should have brighter prospects than some of staying this extreme trip given he wasn't stopping at the end of the Chester Cup over an extended 2m2f last time; has raised his game in cheekpieces (fitted in only his last two races) and he could outrun his odds if coping okay with fast ground.

Verdict

Believitanducan has swept all before him this season but there is more for him to prove over this extreme trip and on ground firmer than good. DEFIANTLY's defiant second over 2m4f at Royal Ascot is therefore the most persuasive piece of evidence and that race is also a positive pointer to the chance of Annabel's Ghost, who is second choice. Maxi King has strong each-way claims, while Alphonse Le Grande hinted at a revival behind Believitanducan at Newcastle and Highwind will be probably figure prominently. Valiancy is the seriously unexposed contender regarding a major stamina test.[Richard Austen]
