Form & Verdict
Back in prime form since swapping cheekpieces for a visor in June, winning here (2m5f, good) before commendable third in Summer Plate at Market Rasen (nearly 2m7f, good); unraced beyond 3m but soft ground won't faze him and he can make a bold bid from the front.

Win/placed form in his usual cheekpieces before making all for a narrow success in the newly fitted visor (with tongue-tie worn for last seven starts) at Cartmel (2m5f, good); he's getting high in the weights now (raised another 4lb) and he won't be the only one racing prominently.

In fine fettle in recent runs, landing his fifth win over fences at Kelso (2m5f, good) in April and placed since at Aintree and Perth; swaps cheekpieces for a first-time visor and looks sure to give another good account.

Form & Verdict
Launched chasing carer with two small-field wins in June (2m6f/2m4f, good) and held every chance before unseating rider on latest outing; may not be ideally suited by the forecast rain but might still be on the upgrade and could plausibly have untapped potential over this new trip.

Switching to fences has reaped benefits, backing up his opening Stratford win with an authoritative display under 5lb claimer at Uttoxeter (2m4f, good; evens favourite); another 5lb higher today; Sean Bowen is back aboard; strong likelihood of better to come, and stable won this last year, so he is the one to beat.

Maiden prior to easily justifying favouritism at Stratford (2m6f, good) on chase/seasonal debut, improving plenty for the change of sphere; defied top weight on that occasion and, despite 8lb rise, is now at the other end of the handicap upped in grade; respected.

Form & Verdict
Popular veteran who runs this track well and capitalised upon some significant help from the handicapper when winning Norfolk National at Fakenham (3m5f, good) in May; back up in trip after very respectable fourth over hurdles here (2m6f, good) last month, and won't object to the forecast rain (won this race on heavy ground in 2024); must be considered.

Popular veteran who runs this track well and capitalised upon some significant help from the handicapper when winning Norfolk National at Fakenham (3m5f, good) in May; this drop back in trip is not ideal on his return to hurdling, though; cheekpieces (worn for last three races) left off today.

No longer the force of old and inconsistent nowadays but he capitalised upon some significant help from the handicapper when winning Norfolk National at Fakenham (3m5f, good) three weeks ago and he is also very well suited by this track.

In-form 7yo who scored over C&D (good) in June and collected a good prize over hurdles here (2m6f, good) last month; seems fine on slow ground too and could still have a bigger run in him.

In good form over fences here since wind op in April, most notably when winning over 3m1f (good) three weeks ago; should be fine back over this hurdles and over this shorter trip; respected in current mood.

Form & Verdict
Very useful in his prime and has enjoyed a revival this year, winning three times (twice here); seems versatile ground-wise but this is more competitive than the tactical, three-runner contest he won over C&D six weeks ago.

Very useful in his prime and enjoying a revival this year, with the latter of two wins gained here (3m5f, good) in May; last month's C&D third was perfectly respectable and he ought to be right in the thick of things again.

Effective on good and soft ground; gained three of his ten chase wins over C&D; not firing on all cylinders since returning from a break in May, though, and needs last month's wind operation to have made a difference.

Has won ten of his 30 chases, four of them last year; hasn't been in quite such good form this term, last time finishing 8l fourth of six at Cartmel (3m1f, good), but he's on a good mark now.

Admirable strike-rate of 10-29 over fences; won this 12 months ago off 1lb higher and had only five starts in the meantime, the latest respectable in a higher grade behind stablemate Stratagem; chance.

Verdict

This is competitive and it’s hard to know which way to turn. The oldest runner, TOMMIE BEAU, was behind Caughtinyourtrance when fourth in a 2m6f hurdle here last month but was beaten only about 6l and can be seen to better effect if, as seems likely, this race develops into a slog. He gets the nod ahead of Breizh River, who was placed off today’s mark in last month’s valuable Summer Plate at Market Rasen and was a course winner before that. Caughtinyourtrance, Grand Clermont and Tamarind Bay are also afforded significant respect.[Chris Wilson]
