Without a win since January 2021 and he hasn't really been threatening this winter, especially so at Doncaster most recently when the first beaten (3m, soft); wouldn't be the percentage call. |

High-class staying chase form includes a close second in the 2024 Scottish National but he fell in that race last year and hasn't shown a glimmer of his old ability over hurdles or fences since; lots to prove. |

Very useful marathon chaser on his day but looked out of sorts in three hurdle races towards end of last year; given another wind operation (his third) since; well handicapped but reverts to chasing with lots to prove. |

Very useful marathon chaser on his day; didn't run anything like as badly as 61l defeat might suggest when making seasonal debut in recent 2m7f hurdle race at Uttoxeter but needs that outing to have brought him on. |

Completed a Wetherby double (2m3f, soft) last February and he's back down to his last winning mark; hasn't hit the same heights this season but ran okay when third at Wetherby (2m3f, soft) last month and he now contests his first veterans' chase; could be involved. |

Bounced back to form and won soft-ground marathons at Banger (3m5f) and Hexham (4m) in February/March; pulled up (lame) in early stages at Plumpton last time but has made the frame in the last two editions of this race (both on good ground) and can make his presence felt again. |

Exploited a reduced mark to win at Bangor (3m5f, soft) in February and again had plenty in hand at Hexham (4m, soft) 12 days ago; this is a hotter race than last time and this 10yo is up 10lb, but he's clearly in rude health and could be bang there once more; handles any ground. |

Exploited a reduced mark to win readily at Bangor (extended 3m5f, soft) four weeks ago; on last season's evidence a 9lb rise is unlikely to stop him if he can back up that latest performance; high on the list. |

Won two staying handicap chases during the first half of 2021, the latest off 8lb higher; his last campaign never got off the ground and a watching brief is probably best after a lengthy break. |

Made all in February and May 2021 but he's run just four times since and achieved very little; tongue-tie and cheekpieces are removed; down the weights but there's a lot to take on trust. |

Ex-Dan Skelton; he has pulled up in his three of his last four races but did go close when he did get round at Uttoxeter in December (2m4f, heavy; effective on good); he's risky but also capable. |

Runs off a mark 10lb lower than when fifth of 14 in this last year, beaten just over 13l; he's run a couple of reasonable races this season but hasn't shown enough to suggest he's the one to be on today. |

Led close home to win this race off 5lb higher a year ago (soft ground) and was seemingly perked up by cheekpieces when third on both outings last month; made up considerable ground from the rear at Sandown (1m7f, soft) on latter occasion and has strong claims here if the headgear continues to aid him. |

Acts on any ground; half-length second off 4lb higher in this contest 12 months ago; out of sorts this term until posting a resurgent effort, behind solid rivals, in first-time cheekpieces at Windsor most recently; enters calculations in the retained headgear. |

Rallied for a near miss over C&D in December (Regal Renaissance challenging when falling) and he was part responsible for the strong pace off which Rodney won at Hereford (2m5f, soft); capable of being involved should this pan out more favourably. |

Won this race on chasing debut in 2023 and was also on target at Kempton (2m4f, good to soft) the following January; drew a blank and became rather disappointing last season but can be very dangerous off current mark if revitalised after 225-day break. |

Verdict
Having been set some pretty tough assignments towards the end of last season SHANTY ALLEY returned to form with a good second behind a revitalised course specialist at Uttoxeter in May. He’s still on a good mark and might be the answer. Eaton Collina ended last season in very good form but resumes on a fairly tough mark and a bigger threat to the selection may come from chasing debutant Pepe Le Moko.[Chris Wilson]
