Had two wind ops on either side of winning a 2m4f maiden hurdle at Market Rasen in April 2023; lightly raced since and it wasn't his first scruffy jump when falling on chase debut in November; others safer.

Made the frame on first two starts this season (3m2f/3m1f) and ran better than eventual 27l defeat might suggest when fifth at Uttoxeter (3m, good to soft) a fortnight ago; big player if combination of drop back in trip and change of headgear has desired effect.

Belied 40-1 odds when placed in Sedgefield novice (2m4f, soft) in the autumn but ran very poorly on last month's handicap debut and is difficult to enthuse over after that performance; cheekpieces refitted.

Didn't achieve much on the Flat for this stable last year but showed some promise in 2m4f maiden/novice hurdles in the autumn; makes handicap debut after six-month absence but could have a say if fully tuned up.

Did not fire at Uttoxeter last month and is now 0-5 over fences but his clear second at Catterick (3m1f, good to soft; first-time cheekpieces) two starts ago was a good effort and he'll be suited by the forecast good ground here.

Sent chasing over 3m+ for last four starts, beaten a nose on first occasion and good second with first-time headgear at Catterick on latest; that requires respect but worse than good to soft ground would be a worry.

Yet to win and has a regressive profile, with recent form figures of PUP hardly a ringing endorsement; wind surgery, coupled with the fact that he competes from a lowly mark at a realistic level, are the positives; others preferred.

Better chaser than hurdler, third win coming in 3m Kempton handicap in January (good); better again when second in better-class contest over same C&D following month, disappointingly never counted in Ultima at Cheltenham latest; possibly best going right-handed so could go well here, especially if ground continues to dry out.

Won at Kempton (3m, good) in January and good second in competitive handicap there (3m, good to soft) last month; could give another good account but he didn't quite stay when fifth here (extended 3m2f, good to soft) in December and it's possible he'll again prove vulnerable up the hill.

Closely matched with Deep Cave on their Bangor clash in November (soft) and, back at 3m from 3m2f, he dug deep for a course win last month (good); only went up 1lb for that and the runner-up ran well in defeat last weekend at Ascot.

Ran well in this race last year and similarly notable handicaps at Cheltenham in November/December; confirmed his reliability by justifying favouritism at Ascot (2m5f, soft) most recently, taking chase record to 1212221; rock-solid contender who again looks sure to be involved.

Reliable sort, runner-up in competitive events on last three starts; followed fine effort behind a thriving Panic Attack in the Paddy Power at Cheltenham (2m4f, soft) with another good run there five weeks ago when a mistake at the last didn't help; has notably solid form and high on the list again.

All wins at about 2m; has form figures of 121 since switched to fences, winning at Sandown (soft) most recently; connections landed the big handicap chase at Kempton last Saturday with a similar type; interesting contender, assuming he's as effective back up in distance.

Returned from layoff with three below-par chase/hurdle runs in February/March but, having swapped cheekpieces for blinkers, fared much better on last two appearances; lost out only by a nose after making most of the running at Warwick (3m1f, good) last time; can make another bold bid.

Not solid on his chase/hurdles form this year; previously a consistent sort in this sphere and has a fighting chance off current mark back down in grade, provided he's resurgent.

Verdict

Saladam has the best hurdle form, as was the case when making all here in April. The penalty might leave him vulnerable should a couple of these find some fluency over hurdles, with VINCENZO and The Doyen Chief the obvious two to take from bumpers. The selection’s stable looks nicely forward for this time of year.[Alistair Jones]
