Started season well with Listed novice win at Chepstow (2m3f, soft) and respectable fifth in the Paddy Power at Cheltenham, but two runs since have been disappointing and Harry Skelton jumps ship to ride Heltenham.

Bled from the nose when a fading fourth in the Aintree Foxhunters latest (2m5f, good to soft), though still had Fan De Blues comfortably behind for the second time this year; more prolific on easier surfaces but Taunton win in January reaffirmed he's effective on good as well.

Won the Grand Annual at Cheltenham Festival in March 2024 (2m, soft) and runner-up in it last year (good to soft); comfortable wins in hunter chases on last two starts (2m5f/2m6f, good/good to soft); his stamina will be more severely tested in today's hotter company but leading claims if seeing it out.

Useful handicapper who won the Grand Annual Chase at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival (2m, soft) and was second in that race last year (good to soft); did not need to be at best to make winning hunter chase debut at Taunton (2m5f, good; main rival disappointed) last month and ought to remain a potent threat at this level.

Fine servant over the years with 12 wins, the latest coming when pulling clear with the runner-up in a small field at Chepstow (2m3f, soft) ten days ago; nudged up another 3lb and this race is more competitive, but blinkers seem to have given him a new lease of life lately and he likes Sandown.

Last month's 14l second of nine at Aintree (2m4f, heavy) was a step back in the right direction and he's now only 2lb higher than when scooting up in a small field at Exeter (3m, good) last winter; could have a say.

Progressive novice chaser last term, completing hat-trick at Newbury (2m4f, soft) in March; comfortably landed the odds over hurdles at Wetherby in November and went off favourite for handicap chase at Aintree (2m4f, heavy) last month only to tire in very testing conditions after looking a threat; may still have potential and looks the Skelton first string.

All chase wins around 2m4f, including win at this meeting last year; Newbury specialist who landed fourth win at that track when bagging valuable handicap for second time on penultimate start; never won off a mark this high and drop back down to 2m also asks a question but he's impossible to rule out.

Didn't achieve much in his first two runs over fences (in Ireland) but he sprang a surprise at Ffos Las (2m3f, heavy) last month, pulling a long way clear with the runner-up; raised 3lb; lightly raced for Evan Williams and may have more in the tank.

Possibly needed the run when a never-dangerous 10l third of eight over 2m here on reappearance; this return to 2m4f should suit and he can compete off the same mark as when beating Quel Destin a neck over C&D (soft) last March; also won three times here over hurdles; looks the pick of Gary Moore's pair and is one to take very seriously indeed.

Verdict

The most appealing profile belongs to HUDSON DE GRUGY who goes well at Sandown and shaped with some encouragement over an inadequate 2m on his reappearance. The hat-trick-seeking Georges Saint would be a big danger if turning up but has a first-preference engagement at Wincanton. In his absence, Heltenham and the selection’s old rival Quel Destin would be feared most.[Richard O’Brien]
