Form & Verdict
First foal of unraced half-sister to useful 5f (including 2yo) winner Billy Webster; made a promising start with his eyecatching second in the Brocklesby (soft; 20-1) and he ran into a useful prospect who made all when runner-up at Wolverhampton 11 days ago; this return to testing ground looks a positive and he's a big player back on turf.

Showed ability on the Flat (5f-7f), second on first two starts, but well beaten on handicap debut at Wolverhampton (6f; first-time cheekpieces/gelded) last November after a break; stamina is a major concern on this first run since, making his hurdle debut.

Soft-ground specialist but it was good ground he won on when snapping a two-year losing sequence at Musselburgh (5f) one month ago; was found to have bled from the nose that day and subsequently gelded; up 2lb but his 2yo form would make him a good thing off this mark should that signal a resurgence.

Useful 2yo; it has been a struggle more recently but he is dropping down the weights and appeals as the type to come good soon; that may coincide with him tackling slower ground though.

Two wins over 5f on soft/heavy as a juvenile, the second a Listed event at Chantilly; hasn't won since and only seventh of nine on reappearance, but on a fair mark; could go well though stall 1 a slight negative.

Has plenty of speed in his pedigree but he made a low-key start when fifth of six at Wolverhampton (16-1) and was some way behind Bob The Bandit in that race; best watched.

First foal; dam prolific 5f-5.7f winner (including 2yo/AW; RPR 70), half-sister to useful 5f winner Jabbarockie, out of 6f winning half-sister to several 5f winners; yard 0-43 with 2yos last season and he could be a longer-term prospect.

Verdict

Preference is for BOB THE BANDIT, who made a promising start with his strong-finishing second in the Brocklesby and was a runner-up again behind an impressive winner at Wolverhampton 11 days ago. He sets a good standard on his initial form and should be unfazed by the conditions on this switch back to turf. George Boughey’s filly Englemere has soft-ground winners in her striking pedigree and she’s feared most ahead of another newcomer in Francisco’s Piece.[David Moon]
