Form & Verdict
First foal of unraced half-sister to useful 5f (including 2yo) winner Billy Webster; made a promising start with his eyecatching second in the Brocklesby (soft; 20-1) and he ran into a useful prospect who made all when runner-up at Wolverhampton 11 days ago; this return to testing ground looks a positive and he's a big player back on turf.

Showed ability on the Flat (5f-7f), second on first two starts, but well beaten on handicap debut at Wolverhampton (6f; first-time cheekpieces/gelded) last November after a break; stamina is a major concern on this first run since, making his hurdle debut.

Smart 2yo; struggled in good handicaps last year but he has slipped down the weights and begins this campaign in a lower grade; one to keep a close eye on this year but drying ground isn't in his favour (best on soft/heavy).

Not matched 2yo form this year but he's been tackling deep races and appears to retain ability; his four best efforts have come on deep ground and if he is to revive, it is likely to be under these conditions; stable would ideally be in better form but he's an interesting outsider.

Has plenty of speed in his pedigree but he made a low-key start when fifth of six at Wolverhampton (16-1) and was some way behind Bob The Bandit in that race; best watched.

14-race maiden but was runner-up at Leicester (1m, good) on his penultimate run and ran respectably at Beverley (8.4f, soft) last time; mark has bottomed out now but Hollie Doyle is booked on this return to the AW and he could be dangerous.

First foal; dam prolific 5f-5.7f winner (including 2yo/AW; RPR 70), half-sister to useful 5f winner Jabbarockie, out of 6f winning half-sister to several 5f winners; yard 0-43 with 2yos last season and he could be a longer-term prospect.

Three 5f wins on turf include his last start on grass in good-ground Haydock handicap (first-time blinkers; has won on heavy) in October; didn't quite match that in seven AW starts subsequently but now 2lb below that winning mark; placed just once from five starts at 6f and no headgear today, however.

All three wins over 5f on turf but recent AW form, despite being a beaten favourite on last three starts, puts him in the picture; however, he rarely tackles 6f and when he has, his form has been inconclusive.

Verdict

Preference is for BOB THE BANDIT, who made a promising start with his strong-finishing second in the Brocklesby and was a runner-up again behind an impressive winner at Wolverhampton 11 days ago. He sets a good standard on his initial form and should be unfazed by the conditions on this switch back to turf. George Boughey’s filly Englemere has soft-ground winners in her striking pedigree and she’s feared most ahead of another newcomer in Francisco’s Piece.[David Moon]
