Form & Verdict
Back to form when taking advantage of a reduced mark at Hamilton (5f, good to soft) in June; well beaten at Chester (6f) next time but good ground offers a plausible excuse and this stiff 5f will suit; confidence would increase with every drop of rain.

Made all at Chester (5f, good) this spring and two of his last three defeats have come in very big fields at the major festivals; ran well to be beaten a short head in between and he shouldn't mind any easing of conditions; mark okay and could go well back down in grade.

Made all at Chester this spring and always prominent when narrowly denied in a small field at Sandown latest (5f, good; second run in cheekpieces); probably worth taking on, with consistency not his forte.

Fairly useful on his day; good second over C&D last summer and made all at Chester this spring; has faced mostly difficult tasks otherwise this term but is the least solid contender on 2026 bare form; behind unexposed Westport at Royal Ascot.

C&D winner last spring who has largely been in good nick since cheekpieces went on in May, winning at Haydock (his fourth win there) and also at Carlisle (5f, good to soft) in June; has never won off a mark this high but he ran well from it at Hamilton last time and soft ground would hold no fears; should be on the premises.

Has won twice this year (both when ridden by P J McDonald), at Haydock (5f, soft) in May and Carlisle (5f, good to soft) in June; well beaten at York (6f, good to firm) last time, but that was a 0-105 and he wasn't best drawn; drops back down in grade and should have this run to suit.

Won six times on AW last year; has just one success on turf (good to firm on his debut in 2022) but he was placed on both starts here and last time's third of seven at Doncaster (5f, good to firm) was a solid effort; regularly stays away from ground worse than good so probably doesn't want any rain, which is forecast.

All three wins at 5f, on soft, good to soft and the AW; has had some excuses since the latest in March and the return to a 5f handicap looks in her best interests after she ran in Listed races either side of a modest 6f run at Chester; it's likely she needs to find extra for this, even so.

Soft-ground specialist but it was good ground he won on when snapping a two-year losing sequence at Musselburgh (5f) one month ago; was found to have bled from the nose that day and subsequently gelded; up 2lb but his 2yo form would make him a good thing off this mark should that signal a resurgence.

His three wins for this yard include a soft-ground success at Doncaster just under a year ago; went close at Pontefract in June and the door opened again when getting up late at Newcastle (again 5f, AW) last Thursday; hasn't won off a mark this high since 2022 but it's not hard to see him going well on his first visit to Beverley.

All ten wins at 5f; last scored just over a year ago on good to firm but he's got plenty of form on a softer surface and ran well when runner-up in Epsom's "Dash" in June; also performed with credit at Glorious Goodwood and could be the type to bounce back from a lesser effort at Pontefract a fortnight ago; having just his second outing here since winning a C&D novice back in 2021.

Two no-shows at Goodwood were at this meeting in 2023, including this race; however, provided the track doesn't pose any problems, he could be interesting after strong finishes in the Dash at Epsom and last time at Chester where a slow start was the last thing he needed; he should be coming home to some effect.

Yet to score this term but his sixth of 21 at the Ebor festival (6f, good to firm) indicated he might be rediscovering his level; that didn't prove the case at Windsor last time but he's too well handicapped to ignore and rain would certainly not hinder him.

Saw out 2025 with three AW wins from his final four starts but he's played only minor roles in turf handicaps this year, including when beaten nearly 5l behind King Of Light over C&D in May; could do with some rain or, failing that, a return to the AW as he's well treated now.

Verdict

Only significant rain would cause a couple of these to be passed over in an otherwise competitive sprint. Solar Aclaim (second choice) makes appeal, particularly if the weather forecast proves correct, while Sir Yoshi, Lethal Nymph and Trilby are also worth considering. It would be no great surprise if Vintage Clarets bounced back but the vote goes to FRANCISCO’S PIECE who has the back form to make a mockery of this mark and hopefully last time’s win signals a proper revival in his fortunes. At a probable bigger price Exclamation may reward each-way support.[Richard Russell]
