Form & Verdict
AW maiden winner in June (7f) and he showed better form when third of 12 in a nursery at Glorious Goodwood six weeks ago (7f, good to firm), finishing with a flourish down the middle of the track despite having pulled hard; clearly not short of raw ability but he is likely to face very different ground conditions today.

Strike-rate of 4-8 and unbeaten in two runs since gelded, winning with a bit in hand at both Newmarket (1m, good to soft) and over a little shorter at Chester (soft); can race freely so this big-field scenario should suit, but whether he'll be good enough is doubtful.

Dual winner at 2 who took his form up another notch after a gelding operation when making a winning reappearance in a 15-runner Newmarket handicap (1m, good to soft) 22 days ago; may have been helped by being held up in a race where the leaders appeared to go hard but it was still a pleasing performance and his stable's continued good form provides hope for better again.

Had 7f wins on AW and good ground in his six-race 2yo career; fair fifth of 12 in a York nursery on final outing, when upped to 1m on good to soft; gelded since; needs to resume headway but yard is among the winners.

6f winner on fast turf in June; two respectable runs in nurseries without suggesting she was ahead of her mark; unraced on slower than good but her useful half-sister Edward Cornelius handles soft ground well.

Down the field at Wolverhampton (8.6f, AW) on final 2yo start and she's unraced on slow ground; stamina to prove on stable/seasonal debut (formerly with David Loughnane; remains in same ownership) but this two-time winner returns with her new yard in good form and is not ruled out.

Form & Verdict
She shaped with encouragement in a couple of 7f novice events on good/good to soft in July; reportedly unsuited by quicker conditions when a well-beaten last of three at Doncaster on her nursery debut four weeks ago; down 2lb and underfoot conditions should be more suitable today.

C&D winner as a 2yo and back to form when successful at Kempton (7f; solid form) in October; below that level twice since but better than the result when seventh of 12 over C&D latterly having been caught wide from the outside stall; has fared better with the draw this time and could be dangerous having dipped to only 1lb above the mark he defied at Kempton.

Ran okay in a hot race over C&D last month and duly built on that when winning by a cosy neck 12 days ago (also C&D); major claims off 3lb higher; a positive showing from Waistcoat, who he beat last time, in the 6.40 would increase confidence.

Form & Verdict
Modest form in three fillies' novice/maiden runs and she failed to improve for the switch to nurseries at Wolverhampton last week (6f; first-time cheekpieces, retained); stepping up to 7f could help, as might slower ground, but she doesn't look thrown in.

Never figured in similar event at Lingfield (6f) last week; regressive maiden who needs to derive major benefit from first-time hood.

33/1

Verdict

Surely Not (second choice) did really well to finish as close as he did at Goodwood last time and he has the ability to play a big part in this lesser race. He can take a strong hold and the ground is an unknown so it might be worth taking him on. Day Member needs a step forward but the trip and ground are both plausible reasons to expect better. Haughty is a possible back on a slower surface but DREAM OF MISCHIEF should find this opposition more suitable than he has been facing and he might be the answer.[Paul Smith]
