Kickstarted this season with success at Market Rasen (2m3f) in June but he's twice failed to build on it, beating only one at Newton Abbot (2m5f) last month; others are much preferred.

Formerly very smart and belatedly returned to winning ways in a first-time visor (with tongue-tie returning) over 2m3f at Market Rasen (good); only 3lb higher but that was three months ago and trainer turns to more new headgear now; no certainty to be as good again but strong contender if he is.

Runner-up, despite suffering bad interference, at Lingfield in November (2m7f, good to soft); hasn't touched on that form since (with and without cheekpieces) and his strike-rate of 2-22 is becoming a concern.

Course winner over hurdles; gave a good show, despite suffering bad interference, when runner-up at Lingfield in November (2m7f, good to soft) and although he hasn't performed well over further since, he has a mixed record at best over extreme tests; should be competitive.

Has very modest 1-31 career strike-rate but was clear second to a big improver on last month's seasonal/stable at Uttoxeter (3m, good to soft) and is also suited by this C&D; leading contender.

2-21 over fences, the latest win in January 2021; twice a runner-up on heavy ground last March but pulled up both starts since; probably needed the run last time after 235 days off and he now has a career-low mark, but others are more persuasive.

Twice a runner-up on heavy ground in March, including here, and probably found the good ground too lively when pulled up back here in April; has the ability to figure but has tended to need his first run back from a break in the past.

Apart from his third at Huntingdon in January, he has been most disappointing in the last 18 months, showing little enthusiasm; pulled up over C&D latest (hampered) but perhaps Jamie Moore can inspire him.

Raced with a lot more enthusiasm than has become the norm when third at Huntingdon (2m7f, good to soft) in January but was quickly back in the doldrums at Plumpton the following month and it's hard to predict the extent to which this regressive 9yo will warm to the task here.

Third over C&D in January on penultimate start but that's some way below his best form and far and away the best he's achieved this season; having a 17lb lower mark than this time last year helps somewhat and his stable has had lots of recent winners.

Verdict

Trixster is better than he showed at Cheltenham last month and remains one to be interested in but the most obvious answer is BLAME THE GAME (nap), who has enjoyed a resurgence on good ground since the spring and has conditions very much in his favour again here.[Chris Wilson]
