Form & Verdict
Started off for Philip Hobbs with two good-ground wins at Taunton (both 2m2f; fortunate on first occasion) in the autumn and kept on well for respectable second (flattered by proximity to winner) over C&D (good to soft) 12 days ago; today's forecast slower ground is probably not ideal, though.

Three-time chase winner on good ground, twice over 2m2f here; on a tempting mark now but has lost his way a bit this season and conditions are likely to remain softer than he prefers today.

Very progressive chaser last season, winning four times along the way (1m7f-2m, good-heavy), but pulled up on both outings this term (made bad jumping error on first occasion) and needs to get career back on track.

Always towards rear on seasonal/chase debut in October but shaped with significant promise on next two outings, more recently when fourth at Newbury (2m, soft) on New Year's Eve; well handicapped on hurdle form now and must be considered.

Took a while to get his act together over fences but came good with comfortable win at Doncaster (2m3f, good) last month and is still quite well handicapped if judged on best hurdling form; likely contender.

Reportedly didn't face the first-time blinkers when running very poorly over C&D 12 days ago; needs to bounce back quickly from that but is now 6lb lower than when winning over C&D last winter; cheekpieces refitted today.

Form & Verdict
Scored at Catterick (1m7f, good to soft) in December 2021 and remained in good form in early 2022; current mark is workable and this C&D suits but he has fitness to prove after a ten-month absence (has had wind surgery).

Without a win since 2021 but has made the frame on all four starts this season, most notably when second at Sedgefield (2m3f, soft) two runs ago; continues to slip down the weights and has possibilities if the first-time cheekpieces give him a boost.

Four wins divided between hurdles and fences; has raced mostly at about 2m but seemed to stay Sedgefield's extended 2m3f (soft) when runner-up three weeks ago; drops into a Class 5 here and must have a chance.

Form & Verdict
The form of last winter's handicap hurdle win at Lingfield (2m3f, heavy) reads well but he has failed to complete all three chases this season and it takes a leap of faith to support him here.

Had a good spell before Christmas with wins at Cheltenham (2m, good to soft) and Ascot (2m3f, good), albeit presented with the latter race on a plate by the wayward runner-up; little to recommend him on subsequent soft-ground runs, though, including in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham, and just 1lb lower than for those two defeats.

Overhauled Calico late on over C&D (good to soft) in November and he was the one to profit from Harper's Brook pulling himself up in front at Ascot (2m3f, good) just before Christmas; looked in trouble a long way out and something presumably not right when a remote last of five finishers at Lingfield (2m, soft) in January; freshened up since and his overall profile in the last year or so is positive.

Five chase wins, the latest off 1lb lower at Worcester (2m, good) last summer; ended last year with two very laboured efforts but combination of better ground and ease in grade may enable him to get more competitive here; cheekpieces (left off last time) are back on.

Didn't lead as usual when ultimately pulled up at Kempton last month; did win his previous chase start at Worcester in August (2m, good) off 4lb lower but just three ran that day and, with competition for the lead seemingly assured, he'll do well to win this.

Form & Verdict
Won over hurdles in France (2m1f, heavy) and bettered disappointing British debut when respectable fourth at Ffos Las (2m, good to soft) last March; didn't get home after racing too freely on seasonal/chase debut at Southwell (2m4f, good) in November but significant positives can be drawn from that performance and she may benefit from today's drop back in trip.

Hurdle winner in France in 2020; pulled up on British/handicap debut in February but her fourth at Ffos Las (2m, good to soft; first-time hood) was more encouraging and she's another 4lb lower for today's seasonal/chase debut; hood left off this time; could have a say.

Verdict

Midnight Midge has done pretty well for his new stable since the autumn but he was flattered by his proximity when second here 12 days ago and would appeal more on good ground. Preference is for MONGOL EMPEROR, who is unexposed over fences and comes here after two promising runs. Piccadilly Lilly weakened rather tamely on her chasing debut in the autumn but might be seen to better effect over this shorter trip and is second choice.[Chris Wilson]
