Fair third on last month's handicap debut at Hereford (2m3f, soft) and built on that with easy win at Ludlow (2m5f, soft) last Thursday; he's 5lb ahead of the handicapper under a 7lb penalty and should be tough to beat.

Sole win came here (2m3f, good to soft) from a prominent ride last November; has been a little inconsistent since and probably needs a couple of others to underperform if he is to defy this mark.

Came good with clearcut success at Huntingdon (2m3f, good to soft) in November and has remained in good form; proven on heavy ground and ought to be in the shake-up again.

Point/bumper winner; tongue tied for all his hurdle races; unextended in his first (runner-up since placed in a Grade 2) and has shaped as though crying out for a stiffer stamina test (in keeping with his pedigree) when finishing 2l behind Captain Teague in the Challow (soft) and just under 7l off Gidleigh Park, again over 2m4f, here on Trials Day (good to soft); this could be the ideal race for him to reveal his true colours; shortlisted.

Was looking on about the right mark after his successful handicap debut at Chepstow (2m3f, good to soft) in October but stepping up to 3m in new cheekpieces triggered a vastly improved performance at Wincanton (heavy) where he was in command a long way out and won by 21l; in deeper waters this time with a 12lb higher mark to cope with, but he's unexposed at the trip.

Won quite comfortably on seasonal/handicap debut at Chepstow (2m3f, good to soft) in October and probably ran just as well when rallying second at Kempton (2m5f, soft) last month; did not convince stamina-wise when attempting 3m in between but is probably worth another crack at this trip; sports first-time cheekpieces; major player.

Won here last autumn on first two chase starts (2m7f/2m4f, good) before solid third at Newcastle (2m7f, good); different ground today but he was going okay when unseating seven out at Ffos Las (3m, heavy) last month; wears first-time cheekpieces and he's one to consider.

Very solid record (over 2m4f/2m7f on good going) since switched to chasing, winning twice at Huntingdon then creditable third at Newcastle; likely player provided he's as effective back on forecast much softer ground.

Fell on his first two attempts over fences, but had the race at his mercy at Newton Abbot (3m2f, soft; from 3lb higher) on the second occasion; has failed to sparkle since - usually labouring in rear - although there was a glimmer of spark at Fakenham over Easter.

Unlucky not to open his account at Newton Abbot (3m2f, soft) just under a year ago and ran well when fourth at Market Rasen (3m, good to soft) on Boxing Day, after a layoff, but was struggling from fairly early stage at Chepstow in January and can't be supported with any confidence after that.

Verdict

Market confidence would be welcomed after so long out but JOHNNYWHO is potentially very smart. He had none other than the recent Challow winner Hermes Allen some 19l behind when he won his Irish point and he needs to be winning this to justify his Ballymore entry at Cheltenham. In D’Or ran to a fair level in France and is his most likely danger unless Ranging Bear is good or Starevitch can step up on his Hereford form.[Alistair Jones]
