Made all in this race in 2020; fourth in 2021 and third in 2022 (soundly beaten each time); showed last season that he retains considerable spark and he could improve for last month's reappearance third in the Badger Beer at Wincanton, but it's highly likely that this 11yo is vulnerable today.

High-class chaser with an endless list of big-race wins on the board under his perfect partner Bryony Frost, including a heroic success off the very same mark in this 12 months ago; has an outstanding record when fresh and this venue is made for him (2-2); unlikely to relinquish his crown without a fight, especially should conditions dry out.

Tremendous front-running chaser down the years, including on testing ground, and ran respectably in major 3m handicap at Kempton most recently; defied top weight at Wincanton (3m1f, good to firm) in November but has never looked like he's crying out for this longer distance; may get outstayed.

Initial promise as a novice (October 2021) has not been fulfilled; probably best run since when staying on in the 3m Kerry National last September only to fall at the last; unraced beyond that distance; changed hands and left Emmet Mullins before penultimate start; latest was a step back in the right direction but he has a lot to prove.

Seven-time winner, including twice fences; scored on the Flat last summer; left Emmet Mullins after a hurdles run at Thurles in October; down the field in the Pertemps qualifier at Leopardstown on first start for this stable; form has become erratic but merits respect in this company.

Well handicapped on some of last season's form and was a very creditable fourth in Veterans' Final at Warwick (3m, soft) on last month's reappearance; will cope if the ground becomes very testing here; big player.

Returning from a similar absence (and wind surgery) when dominant from the front over C&D (soft) 14 months ago when only 2lb lower, after which he finished second in the final of this race at Sandown; fortunes went into reverse soon after but he's back from further wind surgery and handicapped to run a blinder if again on good terms with himself.

No longer the force of old and not always a fluent jumper but won two chases in November (2m7f/2m6f) and was runner-up in three small-field races towards end of last season; suited by good ground and will probably give another good account.

Won at Ludlow (3m1f, soft) last January and returned from some more time off with another easy win in the London National at Sandown (3m5f, good) in December; pulled up in the Welsh National later that month (favourite; lost her right-fore shoe) but not written off in view of her previous promise.

Verdict

He’s not quite as good as he once was and has never gone this far before but three-time Grade 1 chase winner FRODON is still very much a class act and is selected to dominate from the front. Quick Wave will be a tough nut to crack if able to replicate the form she showed at Sandown two starts ago but it’s hard to know what to expect from her after her Chepstow flop and a bigger threat to the selection may emerge from Ramses De Teillee.[Chris Wilson]
