Form & Verdict
Impressive on heavy on hurdle debut and ended last term with second in Grade 1 novice at Aintree (2m4f, good to soft); possibly failed to stay 3m when favourite for good handicap at Haydock on reappearance but he reportedly also boiled over in the paddock; 2m is quite a rethink but heavy ground is forecast and his trainer won this race last year.

Acts on heavy; useful for Harry Fry but became inconsistent and has never won a handicap; bought for £35,000 last May and had a remote finish at Worcester in July on his only start since; has career-low mark but plenty to prove, including stamina on this fourth attempt at about 3m.

Placed twice in Grade 1 hurdle races in France on testing ground over about 2m3f in 2021; off for nearly a year and had wind surgery before tailed off on British debut in a handicap at Sandown (16-1) in early December; it's possible he will be a different proposition with that run under his belt.

Verdict

Any number of these are of serious interest but the vote goes to last year’s fourth HACKER DES PLACES. He improved to hold his own in big handicaps at the end of last season, following a win on heavy ground, and he resumed this term in encouraging fashion in October. Dan Skelton has eyecatching candidates in Playful Saint and Knickerbockerglory, but a rejuvenated Galice Macalo might just prove the chief danger. Michael Scudamore’s pair Lebowski and Thor De Cerisy also won well last time out.[Richard Austen]
