Reliable sort who was pipped over 3m4f on soft at Haydock in November; tongue tied first time when creditable fourth at Cheltenham three weeks ago; well beaten sole start on heavy but that was in 2020.

Hampered when unseating in an open point at neighbouring Howick last month, and generally a safe ride; both handicap chase wins (from 17 starts over fences) have come over Wincanton's 3m1f on ground softer than good, and the drying forecast isn't strictly ideal.

Rated much higher in the past so Newbury last time was disappointing (3m2f, good to soft) after going up just 3lb for winning a small-field handicap at Wincanton (3m1f, soft); getting back on soft ground should help and he'll stay okay.

2-16 as chaser, both wins two winters back; failed to complete last term but, after wind surgery, he stuck to his task very well when second at Wetherby and Newbury (3m2f) in his two starts this season; going back up the weights but acts on heavy and looks well worth a second go at this sort of trip.

Without a win since January 2021 and he hasn't really been threatening this winter, especially so at Doncaster most recently when the first beaten (3m, soft); wouldn't be the percentage call.

Has run four times at Lingfield, all over the extended 2m7f and they resulted in 16l, 12l, 20l and 14l wins, the latest of which was on heavy going last February; no sign that they got to the bottom of him but, having been just about in touch turning for home, he ended up a remote fifth when reappearing in the Welsh National (3m6f) last month; bit to prove after that.

Won five from six chases on this track, the one defeat coming when runner-up in this last year on good ground which may have been faster than ideal; went into his shell after but took advantage of a generous mark in no uncertain fashion over C&D 23 days ago (soft; first completion in blinkers); back up 9lb but still 3lb lower than last February; solid chance.

Did well on heavy going two years ago but it saw one of his worst results last term and he's usually reliable; unraced beyond 3m2f but he's shown this season that he stays that trip well and is well worth a shot at this sort of distance; interesting if he goes on the ground.

Something amiss on first start this term but ended last season with three wins in a row; first-time cheekpieces and back on song with a fourth Ffos Las 3m win (three on soft, the second on heavy) one month ago, admittedly booked for second when a clear leader fell at the last but he's been finishing strongly in those Ffos Las races and looks very interesting for a marathon test.

Won five in a row last year (good-soft), including the 3m6f Highland National at Perth; has been rather quiet in last two races, as he was beaten 21l when third over 3m5f and then was pulled up at Kelso (4m); capable but a bit risky today.

Form & Verdict
Ran away with a hurdle race on heavy here last February; improvement has gathered pace with the switch to chasing this term on soft for two wins at Fontwell (3m2f) either side of one here (2m7f); 19l was his winning margin last time and he's gone up 11lb since; this race is a higher grade but he's a rising force and may well find more to remain unbeaten as a chaser.

Bit off more than he could chew in the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham but had been going great guns with four successive wins from 2m7f to 3m3f (three at Fontwell); this is nothing like so demanding as at the Festival but it's still a step up from the grade in which he was winning; respected nonetheless.

Big improvement switched to chasing, with one win at Lingfield and three at Fontwell; 19l and 17l were the last two winning margins, the latest over 3m4f (good to soft) and he goes well in the mud; that handicap form leaves him with a lot to find but he's certainly been impressing at that much lower level.

Has scored twice on heavy; signed off last season with improved form for a wide-margin win at Bangor (soft) when upped to 3m5f; duly hit hard by the handicapper but he was back near that peak form on latest start and this step back up in trip will suit him very well; player.

Verdict

Despite the rise in class in this strong field, it is hard to desert COOLVALLA (nap) following his three wins from three starts as a chaser. He’s been a major improver, shaping as if 3m2f suits him better than 3m, and this longer trip probably won’t stop him. Don Herbager, who won so well over 3m5f at Bangor last season, is second on the list but Fairlawn Flyer’s step up from 3m holds significant potential and he can go very well too. Shanty Valley and Bells Of Peterboro make most appeal among the rest.[Richard Austen]
